https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... d-measuresTo tackle the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant, Javid announced in parliament on Monday that to qualify for a Covid pass, people would need proof of a recent negative test result or three jabs, rather than two. He said the change would come into force “once all adults have had a reasonable chance to get their booster jab”.
The Omicron wave will have raced through and burned itself out before this sort of timetable. People will voluntarily lockdown and venues will close due to ill/isolating staff.

Re: Proof of booster
Re vaccine passports etc.
The UK needs urgent action because we're led by idiots who keep doing the wrong thing, so the disease keeps a strong presence and any variation is an emergency. Our national exit strategy is that everyone catches Omicron, only the strong survive, and we then have enough immunity that life goes back to normal.
We could check by making the regulations differ from place to place randomly and checking what effects are seen. But we're obviously not going to do that because this disease has been suitable for such experiments since the end of the first wave and nobody with power to do any such experiments cares enough to do them. Instead we're just going to blunder on using educated (and uneducated) guesses to determine policy. If we are running such experiments, then we could do them over the whole country and, when results are available, switch the policy based on the results.shpalman wrote: ↑Mon Dec 13, 2021 7:13 pmHow would you propose to check, and what should we do in the meantime? We need a strategy like Chile where their lock down only allowed two, two hour, breaks outside the home, per week. You had to show your permit on your phone if you were outside. It quickly brought surging cases under control.Millennie Al wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 3:37 am

Personally, I will follow such a strategy myself until at least March.

Yes
Mandatory action also protects the venues better against loss of earnings.
This graph is scary, 4.4% to 23.4% between 6th December and 11th December
Have you considered stupidity as an explanation
Re: Proof of booster
Well, the anecdotal evidence from the 5 or so people I know at different pantos around the country is that sales are down generally, but have really dropped badly in the last week, with some shows being cancelled because of poor sales.
Weirdly a few areas are getting really strong numbers, but I couldn’t see any pattern to it.
Not good, given the last year. Lots of theatres rely on panto to see them through quieter parts of the season.
Re: Proof of booster
Why don't we have Christmas in April, or July instead? Just relocate all the office parties, the pantos, & the family get-togethers to a time frame when cases are low.
I suspect that's what I'll end up doing with my sister, whose lad tested positive this week. We'll have a second Christmas for her kids when they're all clear of it and things have settled down again.

Christmas is a solstice celebration. We could move it to the summer solstice. That would be a good idea but a six month lockdown might not be do-able.raven wrote: ↑Thu Dec 16, 2021 11:23 pmWhy don't we have Christmas in April, or July instead? It's really a 'cheer up, it won't be dark and miserable and cold forever, winter will end' festival.
So maybe we should create a 'let's celebrate, cases are finally down' festival instead.

Re: Proof of booster
I've been to a few 'christmas in july' parties when I lived downunder. And the corollary of christmas bbqs in midsummer and palm trees wrapped with christmas lights. It's almost like it's all made up and we could do it when we like...
it's okay to say "I don't know"
Re: Proof of booster
Ah, that takes me back. One of my fondest memories of living in Hawai'i is wrapping Christmas lights around the three potted palms we had in front of the house.
We had a bbq in November, while we were in Northern Ireland. It was blowing a gale too, but MrRaven was determined. Many firelighters were sacrificed....
Re: Proof of booster
My dad's family celebrates Christmas at the end of September/early October because there's too many for a sit-down Christmas meal, and the weather is generally still OK in the UK*. It leaves the fake, commercial Christmas to be spent with the other side of the family, thus solving arguments over which side of the family to spend the holidays with.
[* Also, if Jesus was born at the time of the Roman census, they tended to happen just after the harvest, so the timing is possibly more accurate than the winter solstice!]

Re: Proof of booster
I've done Christmas in March a couple of times when I haven't been able to get back in December, or close. It still works. Think it does need everyone to do it at the same time though. That would've made it better. I'll let you know when it looks like I'm going to do that again.

The whole point is to do it at the darkest time of the year.
In our modern VR world, it should be less relevant. However when I see the sun go down at 3:30, I can certainly see the point of it.

It's a start, but I don't think it was sufficiently random or sufficiently many different areas. Any results would be very waek, but it might be enough to suggest what to study properly.shpalman wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 8:58 amLike a year ago when different parts of the UK were in different tiers?Millennie Al wrote: ↑Wed Dec 15, 2021 3:37 amRe vaccine passports etc.We could check by making the regulations differ from place to place randomly and checking what effects are seen.

Back on topic, went to my GP for my booster yesterday and it’s there in my NHS app already. I hadn’t realised that all my LFTs showed up in there too.

Re: Proof of booster
Here in Spain, your Covid vaccine status is updated on the Andalucian Health app within 24 hours of your latest vaccination. You can print it out (with QR code) or you can pick up a hard copy from your local Centro de Salud. The system works flawlessly.
The vaccination rate here is pretty reassuring. As is the strict adherence to social distancing and mask mandates.
The Andalucian Junta has just introduced mandatory proof of vaccine status in order to enter bars and restaurants. A short while before that was introduced for healthcare settings. A recent negative Covid test is also acceptable.

Re: Proof of booster
They've got to move to vaccination proof plus negative test. Vaccines alone are too weak against Omi transmission.

Re: Proof of booster
Too easy to fiddle ATM. Not that decent people would. My husband did a lateral flow test this morning, before visiting his mum in her care home. He put his results on line. All he needed was the QR number and he was sent a text, allowing him to visit. Plus booster proof of course.
Re: Proof of booster
They don't even ask you to upload a photo of the test result. I suppose you'd still be able to fiddle it if they did, but it'd take more effort than just typing in the serial number and ticking whichever result box you wanted.
