Bowser's policy proposals are mostly about very local issues like filling potholes. In anything more.ambitious she is hampered by DC not being a state and therefore under the thumb of national politics. The top ambition for DC local government for decades has been statehood, but until the Dems get a filibuster proof majority in the Senate that will never happen because it would mean a guaranteed extra Dem Representative and 2 extra Dem Senators.
Ah, I was assuming a mayor would have oversight of some police force, along with stuff like zoning, transportation, education.

But US politics is labyrinthine and DC is a bit of an oddball so I'm probably wrong.

Anything you assume based on how things should work in a sensible system are usually at least heavily caveated in the US.

She does have oversight of such things, but local legislation and local budgets have to be approved by Congress, so she has a lot less ability to actually change things than a typical mayor.

Gotcha, thanks.

That'll be that "taxation without representation" I saw on people's licence plates ;)

Dyqik's point stands in this case I think.

It is genuinely very funny, but I hope it doesn't distract from the genuine attempts at transforming the justice system and wider society. What are Bowser's forthcoming policy proposals?

It seems a bit like the mayoral equivalent of clicktivism - feel-good fun participation that doesn't actually achieve anything beyond annoying some ballbags.
Reminds me of Glasgow city council renaming St George's Place to Nelson Mandela Place (the S.A. consulate was there). It was the first example of that kind of provocative renaming I was aware of. That felt a bit similar at the time but less like a prank as time went by.

(Edit to add) I didn't appreciate at first that the South Africans didn't just have to ignore the new street signs, it was now their postal address so they got it every day in the mail.

I think it does have a point. It is a very public statement that the city of DC supports the aims of the protests. People are social animals, and do tend to try to conform to social norms most of the time, so it is another nudge. Similarly, the statues put up by "The Daughters of the Confederacy" during the Civil Rights era were symbols that those in society with the power to have statues were still in favour of white supremacy. And keeping those statues up in 2020 is a continual reminder that, yes they still have influence.
Have you considered stupidity as an explanation

Loads more footage of police brutality reported on by the BBC. Have the police really not noticed that everyone has cameras now, or are they just super confident in their impunity?

One officer stops to help the guy and is moved on by another cop. Dozens then completely ignore him as he lies apparently unconscious on the ground. More evidence, if it were needed, that all cops are b the problem, not just a few lone-wolf bad-apples. Beatings, gropings, shootings, all on camera.
Two of the officers have been suspended now, which is the first step, I guess.
And now 57 police officers have resigned from the emergency response teams in support of them. Somehow, they are still employed.
Continuing this subthread: the two officers suspended have now been charged with assault.

Adding to that, the city is now providing portable toilets and drinking-water dispensers in expected protest locations.

This is Deray's 8-point plan. All eminently sensible, and all things that could be implemented relatively quickly, which is the point of 8 Can't Wait.

Epic trolling. Trump is going to be spitting blood.

DC renames street near White House 'Black Lives Matter Plaza'
I came here to post about this. My Facebook feed has probably 10 different photos from local residents enjoying the big yellow letters. Props to Mayor Bowser.
They should have renamed Pennsylvania Avenue instead. Not only does it have the white house on it, but also Trump's Washington hotel.
Also, why does that article say it was a mural, when it's very clearly painted on the road?

I guess it's a mural if you adopt Oscar Wilde's proverbial point of view.

It's weird that a mural can be on a wall or a ceiling, and there's no commonplace word for painting on a floor.

They can't call it a flooral.

This being outside on a road/way they might call it a wayral?
Or as long as it is plain text and not illustration it may possibly pass as a mapnote? What does google maps have to say?

And risk the painting crews being gassed, beaten and-or shot? Surely Tom p here one has to consider basic Health & Safety.

The White House fenced, behind which Trump has caged himself, has become a memorial of flowers and photos and messages. Trump is now literally encircled by symbols of the anti-racism movement.

According to Trump: That 75-year old that was pushed and hit his head was apparently an Antifa provocateur...

Incredibly he claimed he fell "harder than he was pushed" and that he was using some kind of device to tamper with police communication equipment.

They really are attempting to create a sort of "invisible enemy" in Antifa. It's probably deserving of its own thread. It seems to me that they're gearing up for a fascistic crackdown on all expressions of left-wing politics and activism by taking a name used by a decentralised group of anarchist anti-fascist protestors (who, lacking any form of leadership or membership, are unable to respond), using it to describe anyone and everyone they want to paint as a troublemaker, and attempting to have the "organisation" added to the list of banned terrorist organisations. (Note that there are zero US-based white supremacist groups on the list)

I saw James Fell put up a Facebook post about McCarthyism and it definitely feels like it has, at the very least, a similar flavour. It's new "the Red under the bed" panic/fear - but worse, as with Communism they did have something of a real existential threat; whereas (as far as I'm aware) Antifa aren't hell bent on destroying the US (except in the minds of those propagating this fear).

Domestic groups of any kind cannot be put on the list. Trump's comments on Antifa were either thick and wrong, or just plain lies.
