The 2010s

Post by El Pollo Diablo » Sun Jun 07, 2020 7:58 am

I was trying to think this morning - on a regional or national level (that is, not on a personal level), how were the 2010s any good at all? How have things improved?

I got "gay marriage". That's it. Help.

Tenants' rights improved in Scotland through this legislation: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/asp/2016/ ... ts/enacted

As did homeless people's rights in Scotland when the requirement for priority need was removed in 2012. And a few other bits and pieces relating to homelessness.

I will try and think of some non Scottish only non housing/homelessness related ones...

I can only think in terms of tech or science developments, nothing political other than gay marriage.

Sorry actually just thought of a couple more housing related ones, not just Scotland this time. Still a bit niche I know.

Ban on tenant fees - introduced in Scotland in 2016, Wales and England in 2019. Hardly revolutionary but I benefited from it so I like it. *shrug*

Fitness for Human Habitation Act - England and Wales as Scotland already had slightly better legislation anyway. Improves rights for tenants living in bad/dangerous accommodation. Notably a Labour Private Members Bill that was voted down several times, and then Grenfell happened.

At a global level, the number of people living in extreme poverty fell by a bit over half between 2010 and 2020.
https://ourworldindata.org/extreme-poverty

There were also dramatic falls in infant and child mortality and deaths from HIV
https://ourworldindata.org/child-mortality
https://ourworldindata.org/hiv-aids

More people had access to clean water
https://ourworldindata.org/water-access

And more were vaccinated
https://ourworldindata.org/vaccination

CO2 emissions by the EU and US actually fell (though they went up in other places)

Streaming, so we can watch movies/tv when it suits us rather than when tv channels decide to schedule them.

Big increase in American tv and film productions being made here.

Nice, thanks, although a quick skim and it seems things are expected to stagnate a bit in some areas.

Yes, most of the reduction in poverty was in Asia. Africa isn’t showing the same trend.

On this note, the Paris Agreement is genuinely a pretty decent bit of legislation, and a massive improvement over what came before.
We have the right to a clean, healthy, sustainable environment.

This is NOT in green ink but just to say this topic was started in WM...sorry I'm a killjoy and this is definitely just me posting. In case there was any confusion about that whatsoever.

I've joined a handful of local Facebook Groups - a couple for where I live, and one for where I grew up. The capacity they give for providing local people support has been striking, both during the flooding earlier in the year, and in the current lockdown.

The ability to provide these very localised support networks (less than 1 sq km) through technology.

Meta? I'd say so!

There's not going to be much help forthcoming.

It all went to sh.t in ... 2010.

The previous decade had seen some amazing improvements towards a more fair society.

Then ...

2003 ...

Then, 7 years of turmoil, but still getting good stuff done.

Then Gordon Brown ameliorated the effect of the 2008/09 recession for a fair bit of the world, and got roundly slapped for doing so.

Then.

2010. It all turned to sh.t. Because spivs and chancers formed a government.

The 2010's were always going to be a nightmare.
Time for a big fat one.
