The England and Wales Green Party is holding a leadership election. Online voting ends on 31 August.

Here’s some basic information about the candidates:

(Great if others could add info, I found the above via Google, just thought it might be good to discuss the Green Party).

They're also voting for their next appointment to the Lords. Here are the candidates:

(COI statement - I've known Andrew Cooper for over forty years, and frankly, he'd be an excellent choice)

Voting on that rather than it being the gift of the party leader does seem like a good idea.

Green party re-elects co-leaders Siân Berry and Jonathan Bartley
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... an-bartley
Berry and Bartley, who took over from the previous leadership combination of Bartley and Caroline Lucas after easily winning the 2018 leadership election, took 49% of first-preference votes, the party said in a statement.

[...]

The party’s deputy leader, Amelia Womack, was re-elected for a fourth term.

Given what BOAF flagged up about Brexit and fishing regs, I wonder if the Greens could use this to rebrand as somehow business friendly...find other examples of this kind of thing and get them onside.

I'm sure I saw that in a previous leadership election, the Greens addressed the gender/non-binary issue in their equal-representation co-leadership by having one of the leadership posts open to candidates who do not identify as a man, and one open to candidates who do not identify as a woman. But I couldn't find that in the documentation for this time round. It seemed like a rather creative idea.

Siân Berry and Jonathan Bartley have stepped down. So I guess there will be a new election.

In typical GP style, the leadership candidates have been invited to a “reverse hustings” tonight so they can ask questions of Greens4HS2. I bet a few turn up.

While I think the Green Party's position on HS2 is wrong (it should be "do it, but not like this" rather than "don't do it"), I hope this doesn't lead to much green-on-green bashing.

The UK needs to drastically cut carbon emissions before HS2 will be operational, its biodiversity is collapsing, rivers and coasts are full of untreated sewage, there's the whole agricultural-subsidy-reform shebang to identify sensible policy positions on, plus how to mainstream sustainability in post-brexit trade deals and the wider economy. There are much bigger fish to fry than HS2 (although, thanks to overfishing, there actually aren't).

But anyway, the greens are a very important voice right now and I'm watching with interest. Although they can only get seats in local elections they're a powerful opportunity to shift the Overton window somewhere back towards reality.

Yes, I agree. I put that here instead of the HS2 thread because it's interesting to have a reverse hustings and it seems like a good opportunity to see what the candidates are made of.

There has already been loads of internal bashing over the trans debate (cost them a pair of leaders) so I think internal turf wars are deeper than single issues - when you look at the candidate list you can see the range of people who feel ownership over the party. It's like Labour in microcosm but with more tie dye.

This can't be helpful which is why a sensible narrative is so vitally important not just within the Greens but also to help the major parties position themselves.

Yes - I love the idea of watching candidates ask questions and listen to the responses. A much more effective way of seeing what they're made of than just enduring them trying to shoe-horn in their pre-written soundbites.

I did notice that the candidate list looks like the manifestation of some deep factionalist rifts, but I'm out of the loop a bit (let my membership lapse when I fled the country). The internal election process looks pretty fair, so hopefully whatever the result everybody will be very sensible and mature about it and focus on what's more important.

I've had it on in the background for the last hour and it's been much better than listening to the radio.

BoAF - the habitat impacts are discussed around 54:00m

We have a winner - Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay. The extremely funky (and a bit closer to the XR style approach) Amelia Womack (the previous deputy leader - she's retain the position) and Tamsin Omond came 2nd but personally I think Denyer and Ramsey are more likely to get election results and crucially I think they'll continue to exert soft influence over the other parties. The other candidates were eliminated after the first round of voting.
