The NRA put in a major effort to support Trump in 2016, and seems to be gearing up to do the same again this year.

And the NY Attorney General has just announced a lawsuit that seeks to dissolve the NRA due to massive fraud by its executive officers.

This is awful sad. Poor NRA. Thoughts and prayers.

She clearly thinks she has a strong case. I hope it’s easy to prove.

Well that won't be over by the election, but I guess that's not the point.

Let's put it this way: the NRA is so corrupt that Oliver North has been calling for them to be investigated.

I think there is a possible solution ... like everything else probably involving more guns and more dead children.

If dead children doesn’t solve it that probably means we just haven’t killed enough children yet.

I think it is in the US Constitution, somewhere near the back.

I've split this topic off from the US Election thread, as it's worthy of its own discussion.

I see that this is already being framed in terms of the second amendment instead of fraud and corruption.

I think it was being framed that way before the Attorney General stepped in front of the cameras. She trailed what she was about to speak about after all.

I must have missed the bit of the 2A that grants the right to defraud gun owners and taxpayers.

if they want to play into the hands of the qanon lot then talking about dissolution is a great idea.

why can’t they just talk about the potential crimes and talk about the punishment later?

Because forcing the NRA to spend its money defending itself rather than supporting trump is a good idea. Also, qanon should be fought not appeased.

If they were the only gun owners' club they might have more of a leg to stand on. But there are others they can join, so I can't see that argument holding up

They are apparently going bankrupt and to Texas. Not sure how that works

Meanwhile, their headquarters is less than 10 miles from me, in Fairfax, Virginia.

The Opening Arguments podcast did an episode on this sort of eventuality. It's in episode 410, and that part starts at about 22 minutes into the episode. I just had a quick relisten and the TL:DL is, If they declare bankruptcy then they can't take any of its assets to the new organisation - that would be a fraudulent transaction. They'd also have trouble taking the NRA's name as that would be infringing on the NRA's copyright and if the NRA didn't prosecute that would be pretty good evidence that the new NRA was actually just the old NRA and that they were trying to escape the New York legal proceedings.

That’s as I understood it. I smell desperation.

I think Wayne La Pierre may be spending some time in prison soon

An even bigger asset is the NRAs membership list and its list of donations to politicians.

Yeah, good point. They mentioned that in the podcast but I left it out because I was lazy.
