Fur trade ban - blame the EU!

Is there actually a reason why we couldn’t ban fur trade while in the EU? Sounds like a load of bollocks to me - certainly it won’t have anything to do with freedom of movement.

The Single Market was also blamed by Labour in this 2018 article, fwiw. https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-44360866

I think it might have been. I haven't looked into it but a unilateral UK ban on sales of fur would probably have been contrary to the free movement of goods.

Ah yes; UKIP, the ERG, the Brexit Party and Britannia Unchained, I imagine the very first thing anyone associates with any one of them groups is their strong and abiding commitment to animal welfare.

I faintly recall Johnson explaining as much just recently however it was hard to make out the words as a bunch of his mates were blazing away with shotguns at some grouse just behind him.

Well maybe I was a little knee jerk. It’s the boy who cried wolf though - maybe this time there was a wolf

Don't worry. It's probably a nice hat by now.

My initial thoughts were along the lines of what do you mean by fur? Got to be careful that you don't ban animal products that are a legitimate by-product of the existing meat trade like sheepskin fleece and rabbit fur. Unless of course that is what you are setting out to do.

It's worth noting that sheepskin is one of the best substances for comfort while sitting for long periods of time while unable to move much. There's a reason it's so commonly found as a seat cloth on wheelchairs.
