If only they had a superpredictor in Downing Street who could foresee that voting not to feed hungry kids would play badly with the voters
Apparently, they 'misunderstood the mood of the country'.
Conservative backbencher Sir Bernard Jenkin said ministers had "misunderstood the mood of the country" by voting down the Labour motion, suggesting some on the government benches might back the opposition if there were another vote.

The liaison committee chair, who supported Boris Johnson's bid to become PM, added that the row had become "a touchstone of how little faith a lot of people now have in the government's conduct".

Five Tory MPs, including education select committee chair Robert Halfon, rebelled against their party and Sir Bernard said he would "wait to see how the government responds" before deciding if he would back them in a second vote.

So they might vote for it because it's popular, rather than it's the right thing to do! They're not exactly covering themselves in glory even if they start back tracking now.

You know when you're just really in the mood to make sure some kids go hungry?

I blame it on low blood sugar after a long debate in the chamber.

My kids have had free milk in school in the last few years, up to age 7. I don’t know if that’s a LEA thing or what.
You wrote a stonking post on Facebook about this.

Pointing out that for a supposedly classically-educated populist, Johnson hadn't seemed to realise that the bread part of "bread and circuses" came first.

Could be overexertion in crack dens and brothels.

Or just coke hoovered up through that final straw.

You wouldn't get much coke for £20 quid though, especially if you had to swap it for food purchased with a meal voucher.

Mind you, I don't really know how much crack or brothels cost in the UK. I read an article about sex work in Lisbon and the prices of both were surprisingly (and depressingly) cheap, and interrelated of course. But I digress.

I would urge anyone, when they see someone using the term 'virtue signalling' on any kind of social media, to issue a brief reminder that 'virtue signalling' is what terrible people call human decency, so they can pretend it's not them who has the problem when they look in the mirror.

Apparently my FMP has said:
Paul, er wotsisnameagain, Holmes wrote:The hardship that campaigners like Marcus Rashford experienced happened under a Labour government. Furthermore, the Labour party when in government in 2008 specifically rejected proposals to extend free school meals to children during holidays.
I haven't read any detail about Rashford, but given that he was born in 97 he was still only 12 when the Tories got back in and immediately stamped out such hardship, well done them. That must be the explanation.

But what's that other bit about Labour rejecting proposals in 2008, anybody know? I assume it's not just fiction, but what's he actually referring to?

The Guardian wrote:The Times (paywall) reports that Downing Street figures have begun the partial climbdown after Johnson was urged to act by his ministers and amid the growing backlash from Tory MPs - including senior figures like Sir Bernard Jenkin - who were forced to vote against the extension of free school meals last week. It reports that George Eustice, the environment secretary, called at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting for the expansion of a £63 million scheme for the most vulnerable.

This morning, however, the health and social care secretary Matt Hancock insisted that the government does not need to extend free school meals beyond term times in England because local councils have been funded to support disadvantaged children instead. Defending the government’s stance, he said it had already provided “a huge amount of extra investment”.
1) Forced? At least 4 of them said bugger that for a game of soldiers and voted in favour of the motion. So does that mean the remaining 300+ Tories didn't a) twig beforehand that this was going to be something that was c.ntish and b) didn't discuss it with each other/point out to those on high that it was a stupid thing to vote against
2) Matt Hancock, you are an arse

A pilot programme was announced in 2008: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... on.schools

So the pilot was done under Labour, the report came out under the Coalition, who then did sweet FA.

I'm surprised that no one informed the whips that this was a bl..dy stupid plan and to pass the news upwards. But there you go.
I also wonder how much of a party Johnson will have left I some of them grew a spine?

Blaming Labour is a pointless response anyway. Even if they're 100% correct, "some people in the past didn't help much either" isn't justification for not helping today.

It's all a fairly good use of tactics that have caused problems for the er, non-right recently. 'Get Brexit Done' and all the nice quick slogans drown out all the rational arguments because e.g. with GBD - most people *were* sick of Brexit, I know I was, so unless you were really worried about leaving the EU, all the other stuff seemed like pointless nitpicking. Now the free school meals thing - nobody gives a sh.t if the Tories have done sensible targeted policies or have increased funding to councils by some figure that's totally meaningless out of context. The Tories could factually be completely right on this and I don't think it would really change anyone's minds that much.

And it does help that it's something concrete, you can imagine a hungry kid sitting there staring at an empty plate all sad, but 'free broadband for all' doesn't have a lot of imagery.

So yeah well done for this one Labour, nice job. And Marcus Rashford who it seems has been pretty much committed to helping people in need of a hand since he was old enough to leave the house by himself, what an example.

Stating the obvious there disco.
