Report goes on to say there was a problem bc it was 150 yards but they only train to 100. That'd be a big pile of Perissododactyl horse-sh.t.

Anyone who's trained in the army has trained up yo 300 yards. And while I'd be reluctant to take a precision shot with an m4 at 300, it wouldn't be a problem at 150.

Im not the best shot ever,, but with an ak-47 I never missed a 5 gallon bucket at 150. Standing. Nor did i have any trouble with 150 on army ranges*. Presumably he had a better rifle and a better shooting position. And since the guy still hadn't entered the school, he probably had a smaller chance of collateral damage if he missed. Which any competent person should not do at that distance

*for some reason 50 left always gave me problems tho. Probably due to deterioration of my old ass eyes and close up vision

The knives were confiscated but officers did not arrest the suspect because no complaint was made by the alleged victims.
So his right to keep and bear arms did not extend to knives - only guns.
I assume that Crimo would have been a minor in 2019, which may have affected things.
You are probably assuming the USA is reasonable. He was born on 20th September 2000. so was 19 some time that month. The age of majority in most of the USA is 18 (including Illinois).

It's hard to fathom how comically incompetent the entire police force* in the general area actually were. Except it's not comical at all. Given a the dead ppl.

It seems that militarising a police force that is full of cowards is a bad thing...

If they're not going to use their guns when they're needed then they should have them taken away so they also can't use them when they're not needed... like shooting innocent black guys running for their lives.

It's not so hard to fathom. It's because so many US police forces are small, that many of them lack the skills and experience you can get with larger police forces. The US has as many separate police forces as the rest of the world put together. Just about every tin-pot little local authority has its own, and then there are bundles of specialist police forces on top.

You'd think this would be an obvious and easy thing to try and fix, given the problem the US has with crime. But it seems hard to address politically for some reason I have never been able to discover. But it doesn't even seem to be an issue that gets mentioned much. I think it must be something at the national level, given it is so pervasive, not just certain states where the laws are medi-evil ((c) Tom Lehrer I wanna go back to Dixie).

It comes down to taxation I believe... a portion of tax is highly localized and pays for similarly localized policing, which only has jurisdiction in its city or town limits.

Bonkers.

Neither have I. All I can tell is that USians seem to have been good at decentralising public service stuff, but bad at re-centralising it when it would make sense to do so.

This is about right, but it's not *because* of taxation. When a city incorporates, it takes on the responsibility of providing public services from whoever was doing it before (most often the county). The taxes didn't cause the police, and the police didn't cause the taxes, they happen at the same time.

They’ve released the video from the Uvalde shooting. Nobody is seen being shot and there is actually a note to say they have removed the sound of the children screaming.

Jesus.

Actually that's a pretty accurate assessment of the state of policing in the US. Large numbers of organizations with vastly different training requirements, objectives, attitudes, and community relationships. Some will be overall productive, some downright toxic*.

It probably at least partially accounts for why small town cops tend to be a..holes. They try to drum up police work with every encounter bc they have little actual police work to do, and they're not busy training.

This notion was confirmed to me by several San Antonio police. SA cops have actual real crime to deal with and hours of paperwork to do every day. They tend not to care about petty drug crimes and frequently issue warnings for traffic violations. They tend to be very reasonable and don't want to arrest anyone unless you give them no other options. In fact, I think San Antonio cops are pretty damn good at balancing stopping crime with not running over the people who they serve. And I tell them that at least some of us appreciate what they do (they get very little of this). Because they are very necessary. Anyone who thinks having no cops is a good idea is a f.cking moron.

And the training is vastly different between forces. Shavano park: recently talked to rookie cop, 9 months, not bad. San Antonio was around a year last time I talked to someone about it. But rural county cops, forces not near big cities with lots of resources... 7 weeks in one tx jurisdiction. And that sh.t shows. A random SA cop will probably be professional and reasonable. A random rural county or small town cop will make you very nervous, for reasons repeated all too often all over Texas**.

My personal record with rural cops is arrest about 1/10 times, 4 times total, always for small amounts of drugs. Tickets and generally making you miserable, over 50%. lives. I guess it's way easier to harass small time drug users than to stop a school shooter with body armor and an AR-15.

My record with SA cops... approximately 30 encounters, one ticket, taken to the VA hospital once, but the lead cop was very cool about it. Admonished a couple times for being generally too loud and volatile, asked to please calm down and generally be less of a jerk, bc they really have better things to do than deal with my drunk ass (shocker everyone!)

Anecdotes, yes. But an experience many would relate to, at least men who have lived here much of their lives.

*the city of Bandera voted away their police force bc they were so toxic. Only the county police and DPS patrol there now, tho Bandera county is almost as bad as the city cops were.

**asking questions like "can you squeal like a pig, boy"

Yup, a former colleague has an American wife (they live in the UK) and they told us about that rule which she had drilled into her as a kid.

Police shoot a man who had thrown away his gun.

Why have I put this in the "mass shooting" thread?

Because they also managed to shoot and injure six bystanders.
