Turtle Dove: the new Passenger Pigeon

Formerly common as f.ck, Turtle Doves have declined by 80% since the 1980s. Nevertheless, they are still shot in their millions each year around the Med, especially on migration-hotspot islands like Malta and Cyprus.

In Italy alone, the 2021 bag limit is being set at 15 birds per hunter. With ~500k of them, that's up to 7.5m birds. The entire European breeding population is estimated at 6-11 million.

This is despite various international agreements (EU Birds Directive, UN Convention on Migratory Species, inter alia) mandating conservation.

Just in case anyone thought humanity was capable of learning/changing.
