How would you go about mending the Met? I can't see that you could close it down and start again, you could never fire that many officers, the police unions would never allow it and there would have to be some sort of continuity to allow policing to continue.
Is it a small number of "rotten apples" with the rest being honest cops trying to hold it together or is there a systematic criminality running through the length and breadth of the force?
You could fire leadership, reshuffle teams and go for mass re-training combined with strict discipline.
I'm pretty sure the current government is more than happy to have squadrons of unaccountable thugs on call in London though, even if they do line their own pockets a bit as well as beating the sh.t out of protestors etc.

Police Unions aren't a thing in the UK. Their interests are represented by the Police Federations. They're basically a union, but explicitly aren't. A lot of it is based on everyone acting on good faith, including them being apolitical, in place of Police being allowed to strike. Ultimately, they don't carry as much clout as the Police Unions in the US. They were set up like this after police strikes just after WW1, as a way to curtail their power.

I think they also like to promote the line that everything is terrible and untrustworthy and corrupt (except the Mail themselves, of course). People buy into right-wing shite more if they're afraid and distrustful, so purveyors of right-wing shite need to maximise the number of things their customers fear and distrust.
This job is made easier by the fact that everything is terrible and untrustworthy.

Totes - but they are too
Occasionally they are on the side of reality, but only in a "stopped clock" kind of way.

Don't want to derail but the Mail has a genuine split personality - it's a bile-filled, hateful, untrustworthy filth rag that does highly effective investigative and campaigning journalism. This might be why politicians are so in thrall with it - the Mail can and does chop politicians down to size.
What's the fun in owning a newspaper otherwise?

and the Fail will campaign on two diametrically opposed topics at the same time.
A few years back, they campaigned against the UK gov offering meds to young women against HPV. At the same time, the edition on sale in Ireland was campaigning against the Irish gov for not offering the same. Prob thought no one would notice.
If you bring your kids up to think for themselves, you can't complain when they do.

Pah, that just demonstrates that the various editors employed by Rothermere have independence. Same as when the MoS under Greig came out for Remain while Dacre was backing Leave.
(Here's one that was new to me in the Dacre vs Greig wars: after moving to the DM, Greig "decided to launch a prominent campaign encouraging readers to ensure that their children were inoculated with MMR vaccine. He also publicly apologised for the newspaper’s historical role in spreading fears about the vaccine’s disproven links to autism during Dacre’s editorship." Their meetings must be fun to watch.)

Would it make sense for a mod to change the title from 'was' to 'is' ?
Have you considered stupidity as an explanation

To borrow a joke, 'the Met used to be institutionally corrupt. Still is, but it used to be too.'

My avatar was a scientific result that was later found to be 'mistaken' - I rarely claim to be 100% correct
ETA 5/8/20: I've been advised that the result was correct, it was the initial interpretation that needed to be withdrawn
Meta? I'd say so!

They really hate people knowing their rights, don't they?
Give a kid some advice and they'll snatch you off the street and assault you, then lie about it for 8 years.

The NPCC said there had been "significant" changes to undercover policing since the case came to light.
Have they stopped spying on social and environmental groups?

I very much doubt it.
And remember that if you botch the exit, the carnival of reaction may be coming to a town near you.

Yeah, but look as all those dangerous criminals they've put away and those violent schemes they've thwarted. There's... there's... er... well, there was that prosecution that collapsed because all the evidence was from police spies. I'm sure plod weren't just completely wasting their time on getting laid a bunch of harmless protesters when there's so much serious crime they could have been tackling.

I don't know if this is corruption or just general incompetence, but the scale of the abuse enabled by the Met does not bear thinking about:

It's what happens when they try to apply IATBMCTT with their willies...
