Climate change education - BBC changes

Post by IvanV » Sun Jul 04, 2021 7:29 pm

The BBC has removed from its GCSE Geography materials the idea that there might be benefits of climate change, after complaints from the likes of George Monbiot.

The page originally had both benefits and costs of climate change, but now only has costs. That's how the BBC describes it. It also appears that the "benefits" it listed were largely denialist propaganda, that they managed to get in on grounds of "balance" after making complaints of their own. So I think the explanation could have been a bit more grown-up.

Plainly there are some localised benefits of a warmer climate, even if they are massively outweighed by other things. Maybe people should be exposed to more nuanced arguments, to make them better understand how denialists can twist these arguments, and make it harder for clever denialists to attack it as one-sided propaganda. Or is that too hard for GCSE level?
