National self-harm

Post by Millennie Al » Sat Oct 02, 2021 4:26 am

Just in case anyone missed it, the UK has indulged in more self harm: Tory fury as GB car stickers set to be replaced by UK version. It seems that in June, the UK notified the UN that it wanted to change the vehicle country identification code from GB to UK: https://treaties.un.org/doc/Publication ... 21-Eng.pdf which means that you are no longer technically allowed to drive in the EU (except Ireland) without the new code being visible.

It's a good thing we have such excellent relations with countries like France, so their border officials won't use this as an excuse to turn back British registered vehicles. Especially at a time when border delays are contributing to shortages.

Has the ruling party completely forgotten what their name means?

Brexiteers on social media are already blaming this on the EU, even though the UK has put out press statements claiming responsibility (correctly) and saying what a great idea it is.
A Department for Transport spokesperson said: "Changing the national identifier from GB to UK symbolises our unity as a nation and is part of a wider move towards using the UK signifier across government.

Well, the UK has a mess of UK-style and GB-style identifiers, and UK is clearly correct and GB is clearly inaccurate, so it makes some sense to rationalise them to be UK-style. The only questions are whether it's actually worth the hassle of changing, and how we get Ukraine to give us our letters back.
