OK. I read some paper that claimed that Economics prizes were the most biased against women, doing some complicated stats. But it seems not borne out by this simple metric.IvanV wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 4:11 pmPhysics would be close to 100:1 by that count wouldn't it?monkey wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 3:59 pmEconomics Nobels are the most male-dominated of the lot. The prize has been awarded ever year begining in 1969. The first female laureate was Elinor Ostrom, who got half a prize in 2009. Then Esther Duflo got 1/3 of a prize in 2019 - her husband Abhijit Banerjee also got a 1/3 of the prize that year.
So far, it's men 52.17 prizes, women 0.83 prizes, a ratio of 62.6 : 1.
Estimated from - 115 prizes (1901 to 2021 minus 6 years not given), only 1.33 gone to women, because I think they only got 1/3 each. Hope I remembered the numbers correctly.
Women win Nobel Prize!!!

lol, that’s economists for you
Re: Women win Nobel Prize!!!
The problem with this metric is that you can't tell whether it is the prize giving that is sexist, or the field in general, or both. Woodchopper's link above looked into that, was that the paper? It had stats in it.IvanV wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 4:11 pmOK. I read some paper that claimed that Economics prizes were the most biased against women, doing some complicated stats. I do this thread most years. In one form or another. It never fails. That's good enough stats for me.

Re: Women win Nobel Prize!!!
Especially galling this year because there was a perfectly good candidate female scientist who could have shared the physics prize for her work on atmospheric science, which would have gone nicely with the men who won for modelling climate. Do the committee members change? What’s the selection process?
Re: Women win Nobel Prize!!!
You're absolutely right, and you've reminded me what it was I read, it was the paper Woodchopper cited.
