You mean apart from direct assistance to TV show makers and writers at tax payers expense?

Similar to the US military providing location access and real equipment and personnel as props and extras to TV shows and films that portray them in a good light.

There's a prolific serial killer in every country in the world.

It's not beyond doubt at all to suggest that Wayne Couzens is a serial killer.

And yes, they do give themselves up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmund_Kemper

" After not hearing any news on the radio about the murders of his mother and Hallett when he arrived in Pueblo, he found a phone booth and called the police. He confessed to the murders of his mother and Hallett, but the police did not take his call seriously and told him to call back at a later time.[54] Several hours later, Kemper called again, asking to speak to an officer he personally knew. He confessed to that officer of killing his mother and Hallett, then waited for the police to arrive and take him into custody, where he also confessed to the murders of the six students."

It is that old conundrum that the power to operate effectively is not easy to separate from powers that can be abused.
One wonders how much of a role the police have played in getting that particular trope into the public consciousness...

As I was reading the thread, various crime shows popped into my head, not least Sherlock Holmes who often went beyond what a policeman was allowed to do. So the idea of a detective needing to break the law to apprehend the villain is at least Victorian.

He seems to have been a very exceptional case.

I note also the article says:
He also had close-to-death experiences as a child: once, when his elder sister tried to push him in front of a train and another time when she successfully pushed him into the deep end of a swimming pool, where he almost drowned.
which makes me wonder if that sister ever went on to kill anyone.

There is also Dennis Rader.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Rader

He was depicted as the anonymous serial killer in Mind Hunter.

You also have to wonder about Dennis Nilson. He was never going to get away with stuffing body parts down the toilet in a house of multiple occupancy.

Although not a murderer, Reynhard Sinaga was a serial rapist. He purposely sought heterosexual men and was most certainly a misogynist. I do wonder about young men found dead in the canals in Manchester - certainly just a speculation and possibly unproveable to attach the deaths to Sinaga.

Also, if you haven't already seen it, I would recommend watching The Hunt for a Killer. It shows the painstaking time it takes to actually hunt someone down who is a serial killer. Based on a real case. It's not sensational at all.
