From my understanding...
  • He needs to pay a third of the company's total current income to service the debt he's just saddled the company with, and it is barely in profit as it is,
  • He apparently wants to transition all current in-house infrastructure (ie: servers what run Twitter) to cloud offerings,
  • He wants to fire a whole bunch of people, many of who will be needed to do the transition above,
  • He wants to do more targeted ads,
  • He wants to let the trolls back on and go back to the 'free speech'* model that nearly killed the company years ago.
I give it two years tops.

*Except in countries that don't like that sort of thing.

Firing the chief counsel without (as far as I can see) announcing a replacement seems a bit rash.

I won’t. I’ll miss it. It gets a lot of flack but can also me enormous fun and very informative.

I use tweetdeck to manage my interaction with Twitter. This means I don't see 'trending' / 'you may also like' / 'promoted' tweets, just ones from people I follow, or tweets that have specific content. It also allows me to see my 'lists' separated out - so I have on column for the comedians I follow, another for the scicomm tweets.

Occasionally I go into native twitter, and it's a horrible, amplifying place.

Seen people claim that Musk will kill off Twitter by allowing back banned people who in the name of free speech will go around being abusive.

What the f.ck? Maybe there's some corner of Twitter that's currently free of abusive and anti-social behaviour, but I haven't seen it. As far as I can see its still full of aggressive people flinging sh.t. Allowing Trump back probably won't make much difference to what people experience already.

Its the most efficient way to get information on some things. But its also a dystopian hellscape whose business model is aggression.

Tbf there have been attempts to measure the level of hatred against people that Trump was spewing out, and it has decreased in the time since he was banned.

Yes, but the ban also coincided with him not being President. So I guess its difficult to separate the two.

Been doing my bit by searching for accounts using racist and homophobic terms and reporting them so far got 40 notifications of accounts being locked or suspended. Go me. Only another hundred million to go.

Yes, I'm in a chatgroup that does that too. DM me if you'd like to join.

There's been a real concerted effort, it seems, from the far right to push racist and antisemitic* memes and hashtags since the muskrat took over, and of course there's huge overlap between those hateful beliefs.

*A form of racism too, of course, but a specific form with its own specific, generally conspiratorial, dynamics

Musk himself is spreading fake news site conspiracy theories about the assassination attempt on Nancy Pelosi.

I don’t think so. Te a useful tool and getting more eyes on worthwhile posts means the self publicising conspiracy pushers don’t get it all their own way.

I've wandered off and set up accounts on mastodon.social and counter.social - same username as here and Twitter.
