Tory MP arrested for various sexual crimes

This one might need it's own thread. This is now a new thread (this post was originally in the male violence thread)
An as yet unamed tory MP has been arrested for various sexual crimes, including rape. The incidents happened between 2002 and 2009.

Several outlets have named one of the three Tory MPs in their 50s who were first elected in 2001, and who weren't in the house today. I will not do so here until a reliable outlet does.

This article gives a name and says they are still in custody but doesn't provide sources so until it gets independently verified I'm not going post it in case it turns out to be incorrect.

Tory MP in his 50's - confirmed by Met Police statement
First elected in 2001 - I think that is an inference from the dates of the offences, which were not stated to be related to parliament, so could be a red herring.

That guy follows me on Twitter but I’m trying to remember why I unfollowed him. I certainly think your right to be cautious.
I get the feeling from twitter tonight that a lot of people are going to be done for libel or contempt.

Yes, I'm not even going looking for people speculating.
I'm getting the impression that the press know exactly who it is, but can't release a name yet. We will find out who it is soon enough.
Mostly this just makes me think that the houses of parliament are an even worse place than I thought they were already, which is probably unfair on most of the people who work there.

Given the risks of getting the wrong person in situations like this, it's better to be cautious when trying to identify people, and that includes sharing other people's identifications.
This isn't a situation where it matters if we know who it is yet. We will find out before it comes to trial, assuming there is enough evidence to charge.

Details of the MP’s arrest emerged during what the government had hoped would be “crime week”, with announcements on toughening up policing. The prime minister told his cabinet on Tuesday morning: “Crime, crime, crime is what we want to focus on.”
Probably not the outcome he wanted...

No-one is making light of rape or assault. Far from it. But those who want to read something into a comment will contrive to do so whatever. They are professional offence takers.
So he wasn’t making light with the smiley tongue out emoji he was in fact using a deeply respectful and dignified smiley tongue out emoji

I wonder if there's going to be a parliamentary #metoo moment as women (and maybe some men) see that reporting sex crimes will be taken seriously.
