I disagree with the argument, with the very idea, that he has an overwhelming mandate from the people, in point of fact he does not, except in the sense of an election result two and a half years ago, but that was then and this is now.
This argument has been posited by both the long Victorian streak of piss, Rees-Mogg and Johnson himself. Rees-Mogg has even described it as a transition to a more 'presidential' style of Prime minister.

This is not how our democracy works. We voted for a local candidate, not Boris. Then the winning side chooses a Prime Minister. We didn't choose him.

The idea of a presidential Prime Minister perhaps fed to him by Mogg, feeds directly into his over inflated sense of self worth and ego, no wonder the deluded idiot thinks he has reason to stay on, even in the face of revolt from his own party.
He probably also erroneously thinks he owns the Tories in the same way that Trump owns the GOP

We’ve just had another resignation- I think it’s 39 now

Amusing to see various outlets running with the line that Johnson will commit to hang-on because to leave now would result in "chaos".

Yes because the last 6 months have been an exemplary period of sensible, stable governance and calm understated competence.

HAMMOND: It can't be that bad
MORDAUNT: Tory MPs crying, everywhere. Locking themselves in offices to avoid accidentally becoming a minister and-

ED MILIBAND: CHAOS, motherf.ckers!

HAMMOND <phone>: Was that Ed?
MORDAUNT: He keeps doing that. It's infuriating.

Reports that he has refused to resign.

Looks like we’re back to the hypotheticals about what happens if the PM evidently doesn’t command the confidence of the House, but refuses to leave 10 Downing Street.

At some point bits of the British state may have to ignore the formal hierarchy. My bet would be the Scottish administration first.

Did anyone think he'd go willingly? He said he was going to stay to the 2030's and probably believed it

The snivelling little weasel should have had the courage to resign after his advice to Boris to leave wasn’t taken.

What!!! Not THE Simon Hart who we'd all heard of???

Thing is, Johnson could have rehabilitated his image over time. Like Theresa May has. Could easily have pushed "I'd have been great if only it hadn't been for damned Covid spoiling my marvellous agenda."

It's a treadmill keeping up with the resignations. Literally dawn till dusk.

Now 49.

I wonder if he'll be allowed to keep the whip once he's kicked out... new leader could kick him out for bringing the party into disrepute?

when he’s no longer PM, I reckon he’ll do a full Jobbins-style* mega-flounce and resign as an MP too.
