I'm pretty sure that the PM can't refuse to hold a no confidence in the PM's government vote without causing a constitutional crisis.
5p says he can.
What I don’t understand is why he stopped it? They wouldn’t win it so surely he’s just handed them a PR victory?
ETA PR meaning public relations not proportional representation
And the day before PM questions...
First question will be "did the prime minister block a no confidence debate in the house because he believes that he has lost the confidence of the house?"

I suspect the Opposition may have fudge the words, just so it would cause a fuss.
At the moment, it's just about the only thing they can do.
Johnson rejecting Labour's motion of no confidence and now tabling one of his own that doesn't mention the Prime Minister is a twist that I hadn't seen.

I'm not sure it's a good look though.
It's about all they could do to not fall foul of allowing a vote on this matter whilst also clearing up the wording to be less about Johnson and therefore not providing ammunition to Labour for those MP's who will support Johnson's government next week. Of course they'll say they're supporting a conservative government with an 80 seat majority in the process of choosing a new leader. They'll be right in that too.
Hence why I didn't understand why Labour tried to pull this trick now - had they had pulled it before Johnson's government collapsed those MP's would have egg on their faces, but they didn't.
*Thomas Craig Corbett-Dillon founded the Social Media Agency Westminster Digital, under the name "Craig Dillon". In 2014 a Youtuber "Craig Thomas Dillon" was accused of six cases of rape and and media outlets reporting the case were threatened with legal action by Craig Dillon's lawyer a "Thomas Corbett" reportedly a fake identity with no record of any such lawyer existing. "Thomas Corbett" had previous form posing as You Tube Management to scam backstage passes and the like from various other social media types. That could all be a weird coincidence of similar names though and I don't know if anything ever came of those accusations, so I could be doing him a terrible dis-service but if not, its not a good look.
Not a weird coincidence of similar names - the Daily Dot article on the 2014 allegations links to a denial from the twitter account of the youtuber. The tweet's been deleted but you can see it was posted by the blue tick account @craigtdillon (currently posting as Thomas Corbett-Dillon).
There's a 2015 interview in the Independent that refers to all charges being dropped though. (According to the google summary - I haven't read it cos it's the Independent.)
ETA: that'll teach me to preview before I post. Ninja'd.
It’s telling that I’ve just randomly caught the first 5 minutes of Mock the Week, which was a series of jokes on the general topic of Johnson’s corruption, incompetence and record unpopularity and I genuinely couldn’t put a date on it before Dara summarised it as being Spoiler:
the Owen Patterson shitshow.
“f.ck” I thought to myself “You poor naive innocents, You’ve got a grim 8 months all still to come”.
Still we must repeat the mantra “nobody could have ever predicted how manifestly unfit Johnson was to be PM”

The fact that most of them were wearing poppies was a bit of a give away that it wasn't current.
Lame ducks are, you know, notorious for being lame.
Claiming Johnson is going to be a powerful duck is therefore an extraordinary claim. It needs extraordinary evidence.
It's pretty funny that the Twitter Excitables didn't even take a breath between "OMG Johnson will have superpowers and use them for evil" and "It's a disgrace, he's on holiday again".

The most noteworthy thing about this holiday is that he paid for it himself. Staying somewhere where his Dad has a place....
I'm getting increasingly annoyed at TV "journalists", plus the usual twitter morons, talking about 3 months or October.
Last time it took exactly 2 months. That would be 7 September. The obvious date to crown the new PM and start her honeymoon period is when House returns from recess, 5 September. There's simply no chance it'll be significantly later than that.
Why is this EVEN WORSE than, say Raab ending up in charge?
Well because we'd be looking at 3 months of Johnson pushing his redemption agenda largely unchecked. AND ALSO a cabinet full of even more overpromoted wannabes WHO ARE NOW FIGHTING FOR THE LEADERSHIP
I can't believe the stupidity of that thread. And can't be arsed to go through the errors. Isn't this the train guy, talks about steam engines and stuff?
Oh look, that Garius f.cking idiot was hilariously wrong.
The best thing he did as PM was champion renewables and talk the talk.
He talked the talk, but he didn't walk the walk. The Climate Change Committee's reports showed how we were falling further and further behind our objectives. Concrete decarbonisation plans were always coming next year. Domestic green subsidy schemes in operation were so useless that people didn't even claim the derisory amounts of money available, with no intention of serious replacements. The serious amounts of money needed were never made available. Targets were set, with little plan for how to get there, nor arrangements for investment in the necessary infrastructure to deliver them. When they did eventually deliver their plan, it was only a plan to form a plan.
In other words, talk was all it was. Hardly the champion. As was so often the case with Johnson, all talk and no trousers. (Ukraine was perhaps the most notable exception.)
And something green he did throw £100m at, a battery factory in Tyneside - how that going? Badly.
I'm a bit torn by this. I can see that Johnson is capable of getting attention for something. It was interesting to see on the news how many voters in the Red Wall still see him as the People's Hero, wrongly done down by the Terrible Tory esTablishment. On the other hand, I'm not sure I want such a person to be a champion for a cause he was so two-faced about in office.

I think talking the talk is important, but obviously not sufficient.
