Indonesia outlaws extramarital sex, criticising the govt, etc

Post by IvanV » Tue Dec 06, 2022 12:36 pm

Indonesia had been heading away from authoritarian rule since the downfall of Suharto. But now the government had got away with a major clamp down on personal and political freedoms. Included in the bans are cohabitation of the unmarried, blasphemy, opposing state ideology, and unnotified demonstrations.

There is a limitation on how the extramarital sex ban can be litigated, presumably to protect the hypocrisy of the powerful.

The laws apply to tourists also, which is likely to reduce the demand for visits to Bali in a large way.

Another sad part of the general trend back towards authoritarianism in government.

I think outlawing extra-marital sex would break even the Tories’ irony meter.

***70s stand-up mode***

Banning extra-marital sex is effectively the same banning all sex isn’t it?

Ha! The very idea the Tories have a working irony meter!

Everyone knows they took the batteries out to put in a vibrator in the shape of a Spitting Image -style Thatcher in 1989 and never bothered to replace them.

This isn't about us. It's not about how bad our government is. I know it's bad, but when you immediately jump to this sort of stuff when talking about people who are facing an authoritarian government imposing religious fundamentalism, to focus on our own less severe issues belittles what they are facing.

I don’t often agree with EACL but for what it’s worth I also find it a bit distasteful to be using what is happing in Indonesia as the basis for jokes/snarks about Tories in the UK, at least when it’s a first response from people like this. It’s a very worrying development for people living in Indonesia.

The sad reality is there is very little I can do about Indonesia; show me a petion I'll sign it, if an MP speaks out about it I'll support them, if an BDS-style campaign against Indonesia starts I might support it (or then again I might not because as we used to say in the old country it turns out IALBMCTT).

So what else are we left with? Po-faced agreeing with each other "Down with this sort of thing". Before my reply the OP hadn't produced a single response (sensible or otherwise) in over a day and was heading inexorably to Page 2 to be forgotten forever and this isn't a criticism of IvanV it was because there was simply nothing further to say and nothing really to debate (unless anyone really fancies going down the BDS rabbit hole, and I think history has taught us that 100% definitely wouldn't get derailed almost instantly).

At least my comment produced some sort of response and discussion.

Now the UK Government, that is something I can at least do something about. The Tories policies and Indonesia's differ in degree not kind and if left unchallenged we'll end up in a similar place. An openly-corrupt and incompetent administration is turning increasingly authoritarian to suppress dissent; peaceful protests are being curtailed, the BBC has been neutered, Ch4 is/was facing the abyss,
even our toothless Unions are in the process of being reined back even further.

Add to which we now have the joyful prospect of the importing of manufactured US culture wars to distract us from all the blatant criminality and breathtaking f.cking stupidity. And we look to the US and we see where that leads us, the US has overturned Row Vs Wade and now they are seriously going after contraception too, but hey under no circumstances should anyone draw any parallels between fundamentalist c.nts in Indonesia going after extramarital sex and fundamentalist c.nts in the US and now the UK doing the same in the West.

Because we are clearly better and there is no way any Western country could ever do anything so stupid. Luckily the price of freedom is eternal pretending everything is just fine
