**Approval of Accounts for New Users**

Post by El Pollo Diablo » Tue Dec 03, 2019 3:22 pm

Hi everyone,

Because there's been a huge influx of spammers today, we've turned on account approval for new users.

Things will likely stay this way for good, though once email works properly, hopefully it will become more straightforward.

Cheers.

Not a bad idea. Shame it's necessary; I mean why do spammers try to infiltrate our little corner of t'internet? I'd hazard that most of us are bright enough not to fall for their obvious spam, but I suppose it's all down to various 'bots which base themselves on traffic. So the more successful the site becomes, the more spammers we attract?

I think they just find a PHPBB forum and know what they need to do to sign up. They’ll be bots set loose to find and spam as many forums as they can rather than someone making a deliberate choice because they think we’re obvious marks - you see the same thing in the comments of, say, Wordpress blogs.

The great thing about the email not working properly is the c.nts just end up sitting in an inactive users queue, so I can delete them all in one go.

So it's not a bug, it's a feature?

I've turned on the IP check thing (SpamHaus), so we'll see what happens now

Sorry lads, a few of you were caught in the inactive users. I have activated you all!
