High seas treaty

Massive news that this has passed. One of the things they don’t mention (unless I missed it) is this will allow for the regulation of deep sea mining which looked like it was about to get going in a completely unregulated way.

Interesting that the Guardian report says that China helped broker the deal - so I presume that it either doesn't limit the claims of the Chinese in the South China Sea (or worse, promotes them).

Also, while the deal talks about Marine Genetic Resources, and the EU helped broker the deal, I wonder if the MGR includes limiting whaling.

South China Sea is claimed by China as territorial waters, so wouldn’t be affected by this treaty, at least in their eyes.
