How did Florida become so illberal?

Post by IvanV » Wed Apr 05, 2023 1:33 pm

I always thought Florida was more east coast than southern states in its attitudes.

But when parents can get a head teacher sacked for letting an art class see classical nudes, and the governor cheers on, making teachers frightened for what they teach, it seems to have gone all Arkansas all of a sudden.

Or was it always like this but I never noticed? And how did they end up with such an illiberal governor?

And it's attracted retirees from all over, including those who can't stand liberal states any longer now that they don't have to work there to have a reasonable job.

There's also the highly anti-Communist Cuban element, who will vote against anything that is labeled socialism.

Add to that the rural north of Florida, which borders Alabama and Georgia both geographically and culturally.

But the retirees aren't parents of school age kids.

A simpler explaantion, - Tallahasse is a shithole.

Florida is like just about everywhere in the USA, liberal in urban areas, conservative in the rural. Tallahassee is blue.

Yanks generally have a severe hang-up about sex and nudity. The average Hollywood film shows 0.037 people making love but 52.3 people being killed [1].

Not just Cubans, Hispanic voters in general are drifting republican. The social and economic disaster in Venezuela is also associated with socialism. Some Hispanic voters are also somewhat conservative in cultural matters.

Add to that mix de Santis who is a politically effective Republican governor and a state level Democrat party which apparently is useless.

For year in Marvel comics and movies the X-Men franchise has been used as a metaphor to oppose bigotry in all forms (homophobia, religious, racial etc)

This Florida Republican seems to have missed the point.

I’ve decided I should be on the pardon list if that’s still in the works
