Online Safety Bill

Post by dyqik » Tue Sep 19, 2023 6:05 pm

The UK government has just outlawed end to end encryption in messaging systems, effectively banning WhatsApp and Signal, and placed prior restraint on speech for the first time since the 1600s.

Apparently the requirement to scan encrypted messages has been watered down, though with an interesting/ridiculous caveat,
At the eleventh hour, the Government appeared to back down by confirming in the Lords that it would only require messaging firms to scan for illegal content when it became “technically feasible”.

Crucially, however, that phrase didn’t make it into the amended legislation, leading many privacy advocates and industry bodies to worry that the can has simply been kicked down the road.
it's okay to say "I don't know"

As that article mentions, Wikipedia may shut down UK access because of the requirement for it to check ages before giving access.
