Always a bit much to expect any government not to go down this road. Not that it's unexpected.

Why should we expect the government not to tackle illegal immigration and modern slavery?

We need a more humane asylum policy and that seems to be something government is going towards now. They’re actually going to process cases and as it says in the article they’ll allow existing illegal immigrants to make claims, expecting most who do to succeed. This is good.

But there’s very different to tolerating illegal immigration. And ultimately if you want to build public support for legal immigration (asylum and other kinds) you have to demonstrate a clear difference between legal and illegal.

It's been said many times by campaigners that safe legal routes into the country have been removed giving people little option other than boats. Presumably a number of the people working illegally are doing it at least in part to repay debts to smugglers.

Illegal migration is always going to exist. Trafficking and modern slavery needs to be tackled but it needs to be done with absolute care not to cause harm to its victims. The previous Labour government didn't do a great job of that tbh.

Asylum seekers are not allowed to work.

I'm not sure what the details of the plans allowing people here to claim asylum are, making it unlawful to claim asylum after entering illegally seems to be a pretty new development (or rather it seeks you would be removed and your asylum claim would be processed in the meantime). It really should be reversed and if that's what's happening then I'm glad.

The Home Secretaries of previous Labour govt seemed to be trying their hardest to make Michael Howard look reasonable. Though they have since been exceeded by their successors.

It seems to be common knowledge that nail bars are frequently staffed by Vietnamese illegal migrants, and similar, probably working for sub-minimum wage. I'm pretty sure I learned that from a Radio 4 programme. Which rather makes me wonder why the recent goverment, seemingly hot on such topics, wasn't going around raiding them. Is it rather like conservatives in the US, who want to chuck out illegal immigrants while keeping the ones who clean their houses, nanny their children, serve them in restaurants, etc? I sometimes wonder if anti-immigration rhetoric is a device to keep their wages down.

They presumably expected everyone to boycott businesses where the staff looked foreign.
