Southport attack and riots

Post by Grumble » Wed Jul 31, 2024 6:41 am

Yesterday there were reports that a man shouted to Keir Starmer “How many more Starmer? When are you going to do something?”
In retrospect it seems likely that this person had bought into conspiracy theories, given the rioting last night. https://aje.io/e7bzol

If news reports in the antipodes are to be believed, there has been some appalling behaviour.
Here grows much rhubarb.

I really hope that plenty of the rioters are identified and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

If a peaceful protest is worth 5 years what is a a full-blown race riot worth?
Time for a big fat one.

Seriously not helped by those on twitter either:
1) outright bullshitting and declaring it to be the work of an asylum seeker on an intelligence watch-list or
2) just going for the "people have genuine concerns and are expressing themselves"

Yes.

The disinformation was deliberate.

Well the Just Stop Oil protestors were jailed on conspiracy charges to organise non violent but disruptive/potentially dangerous protest. The charges for violent “protest” conspiracy should be far harsher. It all depends on whether they can track it back to the individuals who organised this because it certainly wasn't spontaneous.

The maximum custodial sentence for riot is ten years. I had a look at the sentencing guidelines and the suggested base term for someone who organised a riot causing serious damage is 6-9 years. This could be affected by factors such as the extent of harm caused, previous convictions (or not), being out on bail, a guilty plea, the riot involving aggression toward people based upon race, gender sexuality etc.

Belfast today. "Coolock Says No" is a slogan of anti-asylum-seeker protestors in north Dublin. Yes, that is an Irish tricolour next to an Ulster flag which is associated with Unionism.

No, multiple similar photos, some of the same scene from a different angle. Search Xitter on "#CoolockSaysNo Belfast". Also, an interesting video:

Surely some of these people can be charged with terrorism offences. Not arguing that those people in particular should be, but anyone who is setting fire to hotels that accommodate asylum seekers and holding mosques under siege should surely be considered for a charge at least.

I suppose it may just come down to what’s the easiest charge to get to stick which is why the tw.t who murdered Jo Cox wasn’t prosecuted under terrorism laws. I r would be nice if they were though.

I see as I read more reporting “sobbing” seems a common theme.

Charging some under terrorism laws might be a necessary prelude to charging the organizers and those that inspired them for conspiracy and supporting terrorism.

I would have thought so.

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2000/11/section/1

(1)In this Act “terrorism” means the use or threat of action where—
(a)the action falls within subsection (2),
(b)the use or threat is designed to influence the government [F1or an international governmental organisation] or to intimidate the public or a section of the public, and
(c)the use or threat is made for the purpose of advancing a political, religious [F2, racial] or ideological cause.
(2)Action falls within this subsection if it—
(a)involves serious violence against a person,
(b)involves serious damage to property,
(c)endangers a person’s life, other than that of the person committing the action,
(d)creates a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public, or
(e)is designed seriously to interfere with or seriously to disrupt an electronic system.
(3)The use or threat of action falling within subsection (2) which involves the use of firearms or explosives is terrorism whether or not subsection (1)(b) is satisfied.
