Acccording to the app I'm going to experience 15,000 + MpH winds today. Oh, dear.

20,000mph off New Quay. The dolphins won’t like that.

Re: All doomed
On the plus side, the wind farms can take the rest of the year off as the pylons will be groaning under the weight of a bumper crop of fresh electricity.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
In six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them. The human body was knocked up pretty late on the Friday afternoon, with a deadline looming. How well do you expect it to work?
Re: All doomed
This would make an ideal question for What If?
What if this forecast was actually correct?

Re: All doomed
Hi Kwazi, how was your first day working on the BBC Weather app?
My avatar was a scientific result that was later found to be 'mistaken' - I rarely claim to be 100% correct
ETA 5/8/20: I've been advised that the result was correct, it was the initial interpretation that needed to be withdrawn
Meta? I'd say so!

Re: All doomed
We were discussing this at work. Basically similar speeds to orbital re-entry speeds but at sea level not scores of kilometres up. Frictional heating would be interesting. And the debris it picks up could be quite abrasive. And large. Would be very interesting to see what happens over bodies of water.
Have you considered stupidity as an explanation

Re: All doomed
It wasn't windy here. That means that the wind has to go from fast to slow. I bet the air gets bunched up a bit inbetween. That's basically a propagating shockwave. Like with a big explosion.
That's about 90% of what ifs, IRC.
Just pick one at random.

Re: All doomed
We actually had red alerts for flooding here.
having that swing is a necessary but not sufficient condition for it meaning a thing

Well propagating shockwaves are fun, aren’t they?

I'm pretty sure that the atmosphere can't generate it's own supersonic flows, however much energy you dump into it over a wide area.
