Alternative link (to what seems like the identical text) without the apparent need to sign up to Bloomberg

Ta, I’m not signed up to Bloomberg but it may have been a gift link that ran out.

I seem to remember when I visited Daresbury some years back they showed us a tower a few metres across and about three storeys high that had originally been filled with SF6 for Science Reasons. I wonder where all of that went when they decommissioned it, and how many Air Jordans worth it represented.

Interesting
Article from 1977 on the design of the Nuclear Structure Facility instrument https://cds.cern.ch/record/1729633/file ... p150-e.pdf

Decommissioned in 1993, the 'Accelerator' tower still remains, it's been a while since we've been there at an Open Day, but - as you say - the tower no longer has the original NSF.

I'm not sure whether the awareness of the significance of the greenhouse gas effects of releasing the SF6 to the atmosphere (which is apparently 22,000 times that of CO2) would have been considered at the time.

I found this interesting article on decomposing SF6 by passing it through electroplating sludge. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23705981/

The line which caught my eye was "...and a limited amount of HF". Sounds like more than a smidgeon, but less than a fair old bit. Anyway, good luck with that, I'll be waaaaay over there.

You just need quick reaction times
