Cryptography and the CIA

Post by jaap » Wed Feb 12, 2020 10:15 am

Here is a fascinating long read from the WaPo:
How the CIA used Crypto AG encryption devices to spy on countries for decades

tldr; The CIA and the BND (the German equivalent) controlled the Swiss company Crypto AG which made encryption machines for several decades, and made sure that those sold to foreign governments were easily crackable.

I don't know why this has just appeared in the news, the company, Boris Hagelin's Aktiebolaget Cryptoteknik, as was had been cooperating with the CIA since the days of mechanical cryptography in WW2

I don't know why anyone trusted them.
