Are we still testing for the virus in the bloodstream, or do we now have the ability to do antibody tests? If detecting the virus itself, I understand that there is a finite window where there is enough virus in the blood to detect. Before that there is a period from initial infection (some of that time a patient might be themselves infectious), and also after the virus has been fought off. Therefore all a virus test will say is that the person does or doesn't have measurable virus now, not definitively that they are, are not, or have been infected or infectious. If we can do antibody tests we can further narrow that down by telling if they have been infected previously.

Further blood virus tests might be required for a definitive answer.

The current tests are for the virus' RNA (from throat swabs I think, not blood), but antibody tests are in development. These will be very useful for identifying who has developed immunity, especially if we're not going to bother testing the mild cases, as we'll want to get the immune population back outdoors as soon as possible and doing economically active things. They'll also be valuable for providing services and social contact for the elderly and vulnerable.

Antibody tests are (apparently*) available now [1][2], but what we don't know if how good or long lasting the IgG immunity is. There have been reports of re-infection, so having IgG antibodies might not confer sufficient immunity to make you safe to work with vulnerable people who have never been infected. There's a lot we don't know yet.

*My spidey sense tingles on the second link. The first link looks more like a legitimate company, but it seems odd that a small, company in Belfast is offering antibody testing. There's a story here somewhere, which has a high probability of me having been taken in.

NYTimes
President Trump told a group of governors Monday morning that they should not wait for the federal government to fill the growing demand for respirators needed to help people diagnosed with coronavirus.

“Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment — try getting it yourselves,” Mr. Trump told the governors during the conference call, a recording of which was shared with The New York Times.

“We will be backing you, but try getting it yourselves. Point of sales, much better, much more direct if you can get it yourself.”

The suggestion surprised some of the governors, who have been scrambling to contain the outbreak and are increasingly looking to the federal government for help with equipment, personnel and financial aid.

Splitting some posts from the Impeachment thread which were actually all speculation about Trump's health.

What is the Trump version of Napoleons famous declaration "His Majestys health has never been better"? *

* This was stated during the catastrophic campaign against Russia in winter, that led to almost everyone being lost.

Intelligence warned about pandemic threat
but Donald doesn't like intelligence.

He much prefers slyness.

He and his friends made huge profits on the stock market using this insider information. It's not unintelligent. c.nty, and possibly illegal(?), sure. But it makes sense.

f.cking doctors and nurses in New York. Nicking masks. Sending them out the back door.

Trump is furious about it. Because he's not getting his cut.

He's just been given an unaudited $500 billion slush fund so I expect he'll be ok. Nicking masks is amateur hour compared to a grifter like Trump.

Unless he actually gets covid, in which case I don't fancy his chances.

It's rare that Donald Trump tweets get completely deleted.

He (or his staff) sometimes deletes and reissues, to correct a silly mis-spelling or clear error. But erasing from the record entirely is another matter.

Here's the tweets that have been removed, presumably by his carers:

That's awesome. It's a pity it all got deleted as it would have kept him in the running for the Noble Prize for spelling. Many of those words were spelled right. Even some of the big ones.

The Washington Post has an article on Trump's tweetstorm which finishes:
One clip showed the Democratic presidential candidate stumbling over his words on CNN, while another featured a doctored GIF of Biden making silly faces.

Then, Trump rounded out the evening by quoting himself:

“So true!” Trump wrote, retweeting his own post from Saturday that said, “Remember, the Cure can’t be worse than the problem itself. Be careful, be safe, use common sense!”

An eye-opening contrast today in a rare visit to a US based car forum; I browsed its more memes-and-cat-pictures area, which I'd never done before. Pro-Trump people do find ways to mock their opponents, even over the amber dumbass's recent blethering about UV and bleach. The method of turning the tables is e.g. to post pics of the genuine research Trump was seemingly trying to allude to in his toddler manner, and then 'shopped pics of morons drinking or injecting bleach. Caption picture 1 "when Trump says" and picture 2 "Dems hear". Hey, presto. Suddenly the faithful can be reassured that Trump is not the imbecile, it's the biased fake news Democrat treasonous journalists who are morons, wilfully misunderstanding what their hero said.

It's a funny old world. Until I saw it, it would never have occurred to me that Trump supporters could do more than cringe and wait for this story to go away. But no. Mock the mockers for their stupidity. Fascinating. And horrifying.

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/07/poli ... index.html
A member of the US Navy who serves as one of President Donald Trump's personal valets has tested positive for coronavirus, CNN learned Thursday, raising concerns about the President's possible exposure to the virus.

The valets are members of an elite military unit dedicated to the White House and often work very close to the President and first family. Trump was upset when he was informed Wednesday that the valet had tested positive, a source told CNN, and the President was subsequently tested again by the White House physician.

In a statement, the White House confirmed CNN's reporting that one of the President's staffers had tested positive.

... the White House has not enforced strict social distancing guidelines for staffers and few people inside the building wear masks during the day, including valets.

How likely is Biden to beat a more conventionally respectable and better organized Republican though? Since Trump plays pretty much from the Republican playbook in terms of policy, if not rhetoric, him getting sick and dying might not be the best thing in the medium/long term.

I would prefer his dementia to get so obvious that even his cultists have to own it, and that they were told beforehand.
Have you considered stupidity as an explanation

Not sure I’ve ever - as an adult at least - actively wanted someone to die. I can’t deny the feeling of hope I had when I heard a valet of his has it though.

His response to the Lincoln Project's "Mourning in America" ad did not seem tremendously hinged, even by his own low standards. He really can't cope with criticism from former Republicans, can he?

The ad is here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_yG_-K2MDo
