I tried downloading it via Google Play. Entered my gmail address as requested but was then told my phone needs to be linked to my computer.

Two questions:

1. How?

2. Why?

If the government want people to co-operate they shouldn't make extra difficulties.
Have you not downloaded anything from Google Play before?

That's my thought too.

Easiest way is to download from Google Play directly on your phone.
That's what I was trying to do.

I also tried the Play Store option on my phone and selected apps. The NHS app isn't there.

Ok well to download it via Google Play on a computer, the phone needs to be linked, because what you do there is just tell Google Play to download it to your phone.

I can see NHS COVID-19 in the Play app on my phone. Maybe if you can't see it, your phone isn't compatible. Have you made sure your version of Android is up to date? It would have needed to be updated to incorporate the Google/Apple API which these bluetooth contact tracers all use.

That could be the problem. I've had the phone since 2016

I think it will work on Android 6, which is from late 2015.

Do these apps talk to one-another? If I live on the English side of the river in Gretna Green but regularly cross over to the Scottish side, do I need both and track and trace separately??

You can't have both on at the same time. I've downloaded the E&W one because I'm visiting for the weekend and had to turn the Scotland one off to get it to work. But I think it's probably fairly straightforward to just switch when you need to?

When I try installing I'm told "This account is not associated with a device".

I give up

Weird. The other possibility is that it doesn't think you're in England & Wales as it told me, when I went to search for it, that "these are the apps available where you are" and showed me the NI and E&W ones.

You can check if your phone knows your Google account by going into the Settings. Then it will either be under "Accounts" or "Google" (It's under Google on my current phone but I vaguely remember that it was under "Accounts" on my previous one. If it's got your Google account on there, then I'm stumped. If not, I think you should be able to add it there.

The app needs Android 6 or above, like I said, because that's the oldest version for which Google has implemented the API.

When I ran an update just now, I was offered various add-ons but not the option to update to a complete new version. Maybe my phone is too old for it.

My tablet has this issue with trying to install anything from Google Play. When I set up the tablet it forced me to make a google account, with a gmail address all of which I've since lost the info for. I have lots of other Google accounts, from whenever else I've been forced to make one, some of which I can still manage to log in to. But I've not yet been able to get any of them associated with the tablet

(I spend most of my life on a PC doing game modding, I'm not that technically inept, but the bl..dy Google account thing has defeated me)

Normally when I can't get the Google Play Store to serve up an app I go to Aptoide, APK Pure, or APK Monk to get the .apk file and install from that. You don't always get all updates automatically (although Aptoide is pretty good), but it works.

So far I haven't been able to find the APK file for this app. I don't know if this is because it's being closely guarded, or just that the search engines and parallel APK stores haven't picked it up yet.

ETA: None of this will help if you have Android version below 6. The app just won't run because the OS doesn't have the necessary services installed (which the FREEDUMMMM people were calling "an unwanted app foisted on us" a couple of months ago).

Seems that if I want to install it I "need" a new phone (even though I don't, the one I have works fine). Do you think I can get the Government to stump up for one?

The government didn't make it compulsory to install the app.

It should be mainly your friends and family who pay for the new phone for you since those are the people you'll be protecting by getting an advance warning of being possibly infected by covid.

JQH should make himself a new phone from his own bootstraps.
