Don't think there's a thread for forumites with Covid. I seem to recall someone saying they had it but no idea who.

You see, I seem to have gone down with it as of this afternoon. Though yet to be formally tested.

So, Groucho Marx-style, welcome to the club that you wouldn't want to be a member of!

Where did I catch it? Probably on the long journey from my father's house to my UK home last week. Spent maybe six hours in enclosed spaces that day.

Good things (so far): (a) Most fortunately I'm on my own right now so I can sit it out without infecting others. (b) I feel basically OK (so far), just like a cold.

Bad things (so far): (a) Completely wrecks plans for the next couple of months (the series of cascading problems is dawning on me). (b) Am in a French village so support services are probably minimal.

Why does it wreck plans for two months?! Don't know, plucked that out of the air (am still in panic mode). Was going to do join others in a few weeks to do work in my home town but I'll just not turn up, it won't be postponed because of me. A lot of atuff I do is online noe anyway.

It could still just be a cold. Daughter [2 of 2] has just got over a nasty fluey cold we assumed was you-know-what till the PCR test said no.

That is what I thought. Had sneezed a few times but recalled that sneezing is not a symptom. And read a day or two ago that colds are on the rise. And when my nose got blocked earlier today, followed by a runny nose, thought "oh it's just a cold after all".

However, have now had other symptoms, plus I learnt today that sneezing is a symptom in the vaccinated.

I know quite a few vaccinated people who’ve had a bout of Covid. With the exception of one person, all recovered within a week.

I may well have had it in Feb 2020, b4 it was even announced. I built a deck for a man who came back from a cruise, got sick, got hospitalized, was intubated for a day and a half, and was told he had an unknown respiratory virus. He was on the previous cruise on that ill fated ship off of China.

I am unlikely to have severe disease as I have no risk factors. Fwiw I'm even type O. I am also unlikely to have spread it very far at the time, as my social contact was minimum. I basically was only in his back yard and my room for two weeks.

Oddly, my sense of smell diminished greatly right about then. So maybe, antibody tests not readily available.

Just sick of the denial and stupidity associated with it. And a diminished sense of smell, possibly.

Did a casino party full of medical doctors and their families. No surprise they were all vaccinated, except for some of the younger kids. Even a 13 year old kid said he was now eligible and got the vaccine.

I know dozens who are still being stubbornly stupid BECAUSE MY RIGHTS AMERICA GOD GUNS HOORAY!

At the end of 2020, pre-vaccines, our daughter turned down an invitation to a weekend away in a big house with 5 of her school friends and their partners. All but one of the 10 came down with Covid over the weekend. At least three of the ten people present were MDs.

Oh guess what? I'm negative (got PCR test result a few hours ago). So FSM knows what I had (cold plus something else simultaneously?).

So the probably inevitable has happened and my son has brought the plague back from school, had a mild fever on Monday. We were the first to get him tested, and alerted the parent's whatsapp group so they all got their asymptomatic brats tested and lo and behold almost half the class has it. School notifies the rest of the class a day later.

So then both me and gf get ourselves tested, me nothing but she has got it as well now, despite spending all of Tuesday in a separate room with the windows open freezing her ladybollocks off. Now it's just me, banished in the cold conservatory counting the spiders crawling in through the wide open windows while the two lepers are asymptomatically watching the GBBO cosily in the living room.


Anyway, just to blow off some steam, my parents are currently in the UK (despite my warnings), living in a separate flat in Surbiton for a month. Since we saw them on Saturday I notify the NHS track people, who promptly phone up my parents to isolate for 10 days. Like, their German vaccination certificate isn't good enough for them they were told, even if their pcr test comes back negative (fingers crossed). Just wtf, if their Germany administered Pfizer vaccines are good enough to be let into the country, how the f.ck are they now an issue? In a country that is so blase about letting the virus rip through its elementary schools (and their parents), this makes no sense to me. I hate to say it and sheldrake will probably tell me off, but it's almost as if just the mere possibility of something being foreign, is enough to drag out the old f.cking hostile environment habits again.

I'm amazed that people are amazed that it's hard to get hold of ingredients from a region that isn't known for it's high levels of immigration into the country.

Anyway I hope you and the fam stay ok warumich. Selfishly, my chances of catching covid over the next week or so are going to increase dramatically (if I didn't already catch it last weekend and just don't know yet argh) so I'm always keen to hear non-terrible stories of people recovering ok.

I'm just kidding, I don't actually think British food is tasteless, it's just one of those international stereotypes you're going to have to live with, just like us and the humour thing.


In fact, German humour is very similar to English humour. You see, English people like self-deprecation and laughing about themselves. In Germany, we also like laughing about the English.

A side-note on German food. Every time I've visited (Sachsen) the food choices are often very heavy and hearty meat/potato/bread combos and Frau HS and I get constipated within days.

We may need to try other German regions to find something more digestible.

I have heard Belgian restaurant food described as 'with the quality of French food, and the quantity of German food'.

Yea hearty and potato based sums it up mostly. Don't really know Saxony, but doesn't sound miles away from what you'd get elsewhere I'm afraid. Where I'm from was Danish until about 150 years ago, so if you visit the far north you get a bit more choice if Scandinavian food agrees with you better - lots of herring, sprats, North Sea shrimps and other water creatures you don't really get in the UK. Which amazes me sometimes because you've got the most tasty shrimp critters frolicking on your doorstep but prefer to import slightly larger ones from Thai slave labour farms. Which leads maybe to one of my few gripes about British food (other than the bread), I.e. that it might actually be better if it was more British

Go to NW Scotland the local langoustine there are amazing.

Saxony is heavily influenced by its Eastern European neighbours. Think Bohemia, Poland - stodgy, rich, gamey stews with potatoes, dumplings (Klöse!) All very heavy and washed down with Dunkelbier.

I have heard Belgian restaurant food described as 'with the quality of French food, and the quantity of German food'.

My first bosd was a very gallic Frenchman who'd been educated at the Sorbonne (and seemed a bit of a Francophobe - go figure).

He did once complain about how the further East you went from France in Europe, the more the cuisine was "pig and more pig".
