Thanks to everyone who showed concern and advice, by the way. I'm feeling much better now, though did have some chest pain and breathing restriction on Sunday so went and got it checked out, with everything coming back fine. Still have some pain and sinusitis, but think I'm doing alright now. I'll still continue to take things easier until everything seems long past.
Good to hear you're feeling better. Very good idea to continue to take things easy.

Yes indeed that is good news. Definitely take it easy.

In other news though, hidden somewhere in this subforum there is a link to a handy website which lists common covid-denial tropes and countering facts.

I quoted it elsewhere (in its claim that the "dying with" vs "dying of" stats for the UK's first wave had a 93% correlation). Now someone's asked for the link and I can't find it. Not on this 'puter anyway. Can anyone help?

Seconded - I had a small argument with someone claiming that we didn’t have more deaths last year once you took off flu!

Concerns grow in St Ives over Covid cases linked to G7 summit
Andrew George, who speaks for the Liberal Democrats in Cornwall on health, said he was concerned about the cases.

He said he did not believe the leaders were “vectors” for Covid. “But other people associated with G7 – security staff, police, media have been intermixing.”

The official insistence that this is nowt to do with the G7 is not really looking tenable.

I was in West Cornwall last weekend and the one night I was booked into a hotel had to be cancelled because of a Covid case. There's a school in the area where it's spread out from.

I'll add some concern, and spare you the advice.

Sounds proper nasty even if nonfatal. Take care EPD.

MV bed occupancy vs new cases since September 2020
(7 day rolling averages for both)

Image

To me it looks roughly 2/3 as bad as the same point in the second wave, and with the growth rate being less. - Looking at the space between the datapoints for the growth rate

I live in the NW, my middle daughter’s year group has just been sent home because of a positive test. I’m getting her a PCR test. She’s not got any of the testable symptoms but all my kids have been complaining of upset stomachs over the last few days.

This year's "four weeks behind Italy" is going to be "link between Covid cases and deaths has been broken" isn't it?
Sir Simon said: “It’s now clear that the NHS vaccination campaign is clearly breaking the link between Covid infections on the one hand, and hospitalisations - and it appears deaths - on the other.”

I notice the UK's average death rate is 1.5 per million per week and rising while in Lombardy it's 1.9 per million and falling (and the case rates in most of the EU, apart from Portugal of course, are lower than they ever got in the UK in April and still falling rapidly). And you all know the numbers in hospital are going up.

Those are f.cking awful graphs. Would be ok if he left off the case ascertainment part but that ruins it.

We are definitely now entering another wave of hospital admissions in the UK.
Hospital admissions are rising too. Both older patients yet to take up the invitation to be vaccinated, and young fit patients in their 20’s and 30’s who have not yet had the chance. There are ~1500 COVID patients in NHS hospitals. The January peak was just under 40,000...

Still very early in this wave but it does seem that fewer ICU patients are needing a ventilator. Many are managing with mid-level support from devices such as CPAP and High-Flow Nasal Oxygen which is good news. We currently have 250 COVID patients in ICU beds across the UK.
