That Excel thing? We had a few days where cases stalled at about 6,000 for no clear reason. Then they added in the missed Excel cases and it jumped to 10,000.

f.ck, we thought. 10,000 cases a day. That's bad.

These days we lose that in the rounding. We're at 50,000 cases, we say. Or 57,000, whatever.

Big jump in the number of new cases in Ireland: 3394 today. Over the previous week it ranged from 744 to 1754. Here's hoping it's just an artefact of the Christmas period, but I'm pessimistic.

Seems there's a massive backlog in reporting.

The one thing you hammer into newbies on yachts is: when you start thinking you'll need to do something precautionary SOON (reef the main; furl the foresail; get into your waterproofs; whatever) - that's the time to do it !! SOON will be too late. /rant/

It's his way of getting people used to the idea after weeks of telling them everything was fine and we could reopen all the schools and get back to licking each other's car door handles and that.

Because yes he's a f.ckwit who hasn't grasped that he can't brazen this one out.

The total number that may be infected between now and the start of March (less than 2 months away) is more than the entire number that have been infected so far right from the start of the outbreak last Feb/March.

With this rate of spread, vaccinating a few million over the next couple of months has a relatively minor effect. It may reduce the death rate significantly towards the end of this period (and will certainly help the small minority of highly vulnerable people who receive it), but won’t stop the disease spreading widely.

Johnson killed a lot of people today.

I'm still angry about his blustering waffle yesterday on the Marr show, where he acted confident and knew nothing. He ordered the schools to open - at the peak moment to pass on Christmas Day infections.

And it sounds like he's abandoning this course just a day later, with an another infuriating "announcement to the nation" at 20:00.

There will be analyses showing how many extra people died from this one day of dithering and opening up of schools. Johnson belongs in prison for manslaughter.

Security officers removed Covid-19 "deniers" who were taking pictures of empty corridors at a NHS hospital where the intensive care unit is at maximum capacity, its chief executive said.
The incident took place at Colchester Hospital at the weekend.
Chief executive Nick Hulme said it "beggars belief" some people were calling the pandemic a hoax.
He said it was "the right thing to do" to keep corridors in outpatients units as empty as possible.

I presume he meant trying to shepherd the economy to make it do what the Tories want it to do; but like many stupid people who have been given a bit of education he believes that using longer words makes him seem more intelligent. It was something he was notorious for as a (failed) journalist.
