Fad Diets!

So I search for this and it isn't a thing on here. Shame upon you all.

Here's one that has no mechanism whatsoever! I bring to you...

The Blood Type Diet

I love actual nutrition as much as any Dietician but Dr. Peter D'Adamo who's he then?

I'm so sure this topic will have legs it must have its own thread.

My favourite fad diet -from America, natch - is the lemon jello and squid diet. Eat as much as you want from either category, nothing else, until you meet your weight goal.

Is this inspired by the popular Japanese crankism that everything about you, from health to love life, is determined by blood group*? Also, I like how, according to the cover of his book, binning everyone into four pigeonholes counts as "individualized".

When it comes to diets, I managed to lose 14 lb by eating beef fat every day. After all, constant dripping wears away a stone.

*One of the many.

I'm O+, the commonest group, so does that mean I can eat everything?

Obviously the correct answer is "yes", but according to the b.llsh.t merchants: 'group O is considered the ancestral blood group in humans so their optimal diet should resemble the high animal protein diets typical of the hunter-gatherer era'

I think A's meant to be high in carbs and meat-free, AB's the omnivorous one, and B's high in dairy.

[according to wiki, 'phylogenetic networks of human and non-human ABO alleles show that the A gene was the first to evolve' and 'there is no evidence that the O gene represents the ancestral gene at the ABO locus']

It's tripe innit.

My Mum put me on the cabbage soup diet when I was 14. It lasted one sip for me. Mum managed a day - which imo is impressive.

Which reminds me of... Jilly Juice. I mean, dear god why? Just why? Also how? But mainly wtf?

The wikipedia article is suitably scathing. Do not look into this if you have a weak stomach. You have been warned.

You can only have tripe if you're group O, I think.

Fad diets always seem to me to be harder to follow than the sensible advice on diet and exercise that everyone ignores.

I think I'll skip the Jilly Juice.

Well, too much wheat and dairy disagrees with me so I tend to go with this following sentiment: cram as much nutrition into everything you eat as you possibly can. Although my preference is basically not-British-or-American-food-thanks. I eat when I'm very hungry, but I fall into a sort of 18/6 routine by just lifestyle and preference.

I could go on, but I won't.

I'd love to know why people fall for these things. I can't accept stupidity as an answer, probably not ignorance either. I've done a lot of reading on the subject, and I enjoy looking up the nutritional contents of food, I'm interested in microbiology too. I'm not an expert in any way shape or form, but is it simply that common sense doesn't make money?

If someone went out and wrote a layman's, common sense guide to nutrition and exercise - readable, pretty, all of that, and it worked to make people healthier, would that sell?

Edit: for being really bad at typing.

And punctuation.

No - type O is the universal donor - so everyone can eat black pudding made from your blood - but you need to avoid black pudding made from types A, B or AB.

[selfrighteousgit]Can I just take this opportunity to remind everyone to give blood when they can? [/selfrighteousgit]

So why isn't bloodpudding on sale marked clearly with bloodgroup content?

Ah right, that old hunter-gatherer myth that they ate a ton of meat rather than nuts, fruit, seeds, roots, eggs and any other damn thing they could get their hands on. The high meat/protein myth also puts the focus on man-the-hunter rather than woman-the gatherer.

No, cows have a dozen or so major blood groups and multiple minor blood antigen groups. Cattle blood transfusions are very difficult to source outside of direct relations, and difficult enough even then. Fortunately (for vets) blood transfusions aren't often required for cattle.

Not just that but, and this is a subject I know next to nothing about, the whole blood antigens thing is a whole lot more complicated than A B AB O, Rh- Rh+. I saw it in a youtube video so it must be true ;)

I've gone back on the keto diet, which really agrees with me, diet-wise. it does seem to be one of the better scientifically supported ones out there. Here's a disturbingly positive article from a pffft, reasonable source.

I need to lose 3 stone before I'm dragged back into the office (kicking and screaming  ) so, yeah, a bit faddy, probably very good but definitely not a lifestyle forever.
