Reading the article it seems that this is a minority of patients who received this implant, Medtronic took action to change its label and inform the regulator in 2016, and that patients, when warned or after experiencing this, all chose to keep the device anyway. It doesn't actually say whether the Parkinson's experts who commented (and hadn't heard of the sinking side-effect) actually implant these things. Also, right at the end, there's a suggestion that affected people might be able to re-learn to swim.

Also interesting this seems t have taken 20 years to come to light. Maybe by the time people need this kind of surgery, most tend not to swim.

Yea, Ive watched neurodegenerative stuff close up, I'd definitely go for the treatment. It's just nice to know about side effects like that; it seems likely people have drowned before the connection was made, maybe a better physio checklist is needed. Good that it messes up golf though. Awful game.
