Here we go GABA-ing; Nutt’s in - maybe

Sorry. Anyway, I don’t know if Facebook’s algorithms think I might like former government scientific advisers or think I might like getting mildly toasted, but either way I’ve been seeing a lot of this ad:

in which former government scientific adviser and Home Secretary baiter David Nutt promotes a drink that isn’t alcoholic but promises effects a bit like having a bit of alcohol.

I’m inclined to think Nutt is genuine here rather than pulling some sort of scam, but has anyone gone to the lengths of actually trying some?

these people did
£16 for 200mL?! That’s one large wine glass full. Price equivalent to a whisky or thereabouts.

Well I think that’s how they intend you to drink it - like a spirit, either mixed or neat. To be fair, things like the Seedlip alcohol-free gin substitutes aren’t very cheap either.

Yeah you're not suppose to drink it like wine, although somewhere on the site it does suggest that 200 ml would be the maximum you should drink in a day (based on the recommended daily limits of some of the things in it). It's not clear to me whether drinking more of it increases the effect and/or how long it takes to wear off and it's time for another one.

I'd certainly be interesting in trying it, except it seems like they don't ship to Italy yet.

10 years or so ago, I came across something called Gabalong tea, an oolong tea (that's one that's half way between green and black) with high GABA levels. My wife liked the idea of it, she likes ideas like that, so we got some.

I can't say I noticed any effect from it. But maybe 40 times the level of GABA of standard tea still isn't very much to do anything noticeable, when brewed as a cup of tea. The retailers aren't very keen on telling you how much dosage of GABA you get from a spoonful of tea brewed as a cup. Though I found an academic article suggesting you get about 2mg of GABA per 200ml mug of Gabalong tea. You can buy GABA tablets to take containing 750mg of GABA. So the tea is giving you almost nothing in comparison to that.

I can't find out how much GABA is in Sentia. Though apparently what Sentia does is "trigger the release of GABA to your brain". So maybe it doesn't need to contain any, just that "trigger".

Nutt is interviewed on his new drinks in the Economist’s Babbage podcast. Info here: https://pca.st/episode/f1a44065-2538-46 ... e17a193133

Seems interesting and it did seem to have an effect on the interviewer who tried it.

Found it. The FAQ on the website says the effect lasts for about 45-60 minutes.

Señor von Laté has ordered some, because he's got more money than sense. Will report back.

Ha, sorry!

Well, a bit underwhelming really. We've had a few measures spread out over a while but not really noticed anything. We might need to go over the recommended 100ml to see if actually having a decent amount does anything but I'm not sure how much is left in the bottle anyway.

They've launched Sentia Black now too.

I'm going to wait for them to follow the inevitable arc of any modern drink company (including Sunny D), and launch a "spiked" alcoholic version.
