But I do reckon that the Serbian authorities won't bother to do anything about a national hero supposedly breaking the rules.

Thank f.ck for that. I was wondering if players would refuse to play against him, giving him a bye all the way to the trophy, but I couldn’t see it actually happening.

I suspect that a minister with a functioning* sense of self preservation would have been be unwilling to take an executive decision undermining government policy when they'd know that the decision would also be unpopular and probably politically damaging.

Djokovic doesn't seem well loved in Australia

I was thinking that there'd either be very empty seats or the crowd would be so vocal any match would become a farce and have to be called off.

I would have thought it would be better to revoke it because it contained incorrect information rather than the hand wavey 'public interest' reason, which opens up the challenge of ' but he poses no risk, having been infected'

Indeed.

Aye. It's the reason why the US famously asks if you're planning to commit acts of terrorism, etc, so that as soon as someone's convicted of anything related to the immigration form they can just be booted out of the country toot sweet

The Australian authorities are not looking very competent at this point. I expect Novax will win his appeal and Oz will look even worse in the eyes of the public.

On the one hand, it seems reasonable enough to be allowed enter a country that requires a vaccine, if you can't have a vaccine because it is too recently since you had Covid, and in any case a recent infection is considered as good as a vaccine for most purposes.

On the other hand, it seems like an abuse of the system to go to a country that requires you to be vaccinated, but only in the immediate aftermath of an infection, when you never had any intention of getting vaccinated.

I think it is perhaps a bit difficult for Australia to navigate between the conflicting tensions of these. On the one hand, it doesn't really want to stop leading sports players coming to international competitions with a rule that they can't comply with. On the other hand, it seems difficult to devise a fair rule they can't abuse.

I thought it was known before the first court case that Novax "inadvertently made erroneous entries on the application", or words to that effect, claiming it made little practical difference. So it might have been difficult to cancel his visa on those grounds. The real issue is that he abused the system, and that wasn't actually formally against the rules, which is probably why they resorted to handwavey discretionary grounds.

I think Australia had a more public battle with antivaxxers than Britain, and clamped down on it harder - there was someone on the Old Version of the forum who kept us informed on that. So I think standing up to antivaxxers is perhaps more of an issue of Australian politicians than here.

The Djokovic circus continues on Sunday. Australia just looks worse and worse. Just take him to the airport and put him on the first plane out.
The Serb faces deportation after his visa was cancelled for a second time, with the government labelling the 34-year-old a threat to public health.

His lawyers are appealing against what they called an "irrational" decision, with the hearing set for Sunday.

Djokovic is still scheduled to play the Australian Open on Monday in Melbourne.

The random woman they found on the beach in Palermo at the beginning of all this who went viral for her insistence that "non c'è ne coviddi" is - guess what - now saying that people should get vaccinated after all, now that someone she cares about caught it. What are the chances and why did anyone put these people on the news in the first place.

Lost in straight sets.

And he's f.cked his own career too.

Don't lie on immigration forms, folks. Especially in countries where government lawyers come out with fasho crap like
In court on Sunday, the minister’s counsel, Stephen Lloyd, argued Australia “must not be bound to suffer the presence of an alien for fear of what might happen if they were removed”
and nobody bats an eyelid.
We have the right to a clean, healthy, sustainable environment.

Don't not be vaccinated, especially when the place you're going to requires it.

So has he been officially deported? If so, doesn't that mean he won't be able to enter Australia for several years?

Aye. And possibly many other countries, as you usually have to tell them you’ve been deported before.

Assuming covid doesn't completely disappear during 2022 I seriously hope Australia's response is going to be "get vaccinated, then we'll talk".
