"Bosom Peril"

Post by jaap » Tue Mar 22, 2022 12:42 pm

An interesting article mentioned on Language Log:

"Bosom peril" is not "breast cancer": How weird computer-generated phrases help researchers find scientific publishing fraud.

It is a couple of months old, but don't think it was discussed here before. The title is pretty self-explanatory - the use of automated tools for disguising acts of plagiarism results in obviously weird phrases. Despite that, such papers are still getting through and get published.

I remember being struck by the phrase "flag commotion" in a discussion of fake papers here last year. (It was a distortion of "signal to noise".)

And Water Sheep, but I think that might have been a mistranslation in good faith.
Have you considered stupidity as an explanation

The same author as mentioned by Language Log, Guillaume Cabanac.

Ah, I had a feeling it had been touched upon here before but couldn't find it.

It's quite entertaining to look at some of Cabanac's examples.
"a joint endeavor in the savvy lattice field"
rather reminds me of Poul Anderson's "uncleftish beholding" for "atomic theory", which LW mentioned a couple of months ago.

Not to be confused with a cabbage growing cooperative.

I've just spent 10 mins thinking the topic title is Boson Peril, and wondering how upon earth it got paired with breast cancer.

Bosons would come in pairs.
My avatar was a scientific result that was later found to be 'mistaken' - I rarely claim to be 100% correct
ETA 5/8/20: I've been advised that the result was correct, it was the initial interpretation that needed to be withdrawn
Meta? I'd say so!
