US 2021 Capitol insurrection
Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
Trump's been subpoenaed* by the Jan 6th committee.
clicky
*He's been subpoenaed so many times, I bet he can remember how to spell it without looking it up, even though you have just read the word, which apparently, I can't.

Did they wait for Bannon to be sentenced, to concentrate the mind?
Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
He'll probably stall until after the mid-terms in the hope that his party take control of the House and shut down the Committee.
And remember that if you botch the exit, the carnival of reaction may be coming to a town near you.

His testimony will be after the midterms. I imagine he'll try to delay and wriggle his way out of it anyway, despite previously saying he wants to.

I'd like that too, but he's an ex-president who just the other day announced another go at the job. The indictment has to be easily shown to be neutral. Of course it won't be by Qanon types and the rest of the far right, but it'll work in court when Trump instructs his lawyers to argue that everyone is out to get him as part of a witch hunt. It'll also stop him delaying things by going to court and demanding one, like he did after the raid.
Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
Frisch has just conceded to Boebert. There'll still be a recount because there's only 0.16% (~500 votes) in it and that's the law, but Frisch don't reckon it'll change the result much.
I didn't know which way that race would go before, but I was hoping Boebert wouldn't win because she cray-cray far right.

Likewise. She had a very easy seat, though, with redistricting having apparently made it quite a bit easier, so the fact that it was close is notable - a Republican candidate who wasn't a mad far rightist with a sex criminal husband would have carried the seat easily.monkey wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 7:24 pmFrisch has just conceded to Boebert. Garland basically said Trump is beyond ordinary law and gets special protection because he's running.monkey wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 7:19 pmI'd like that too, but he's an ex-president who just the other day announced another go at the job. It's not special protection, as it does not mean Trump will get away with it. It's the DoJ saying "we're neutral in this" in the face of a real or perceived conflict of interest.lpm wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 7:41 pmGarland basically said Trump is beyond ordinary law and gets special protection because he's running.monkey wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 7:19 pmI'd like that too, but he's an ex-president who just the other day announced another go at the job. Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
Another possible reason for the Special Counsel: there's at least 8 GOP congressmen and one senator with potential criminal liability. That includes Jim Jordan, likely to be chair of the House Judiciary Committee that has oversight of the DoJ.

Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
I am very glad that most of the Maga morons and christo-fascists lost in the midterms. It shows that a very slim majority of merkinanians don't wish to tolerate all this hate and special privilege in the name of jesus.
However, the fact that such Uber a..holes as Greg abbott in TX (and others such as boebert) won their elections over far more reasonable candidates leaves me very concerned.
The fact of Christianity's attempts at a nationwide coup getting so much support, and the parallels to fascism that are so obvious (to everyone but them) leaves me on the cusp of changing my mind on which religion is currently the most dangerous. Islam may have to take a back seat to christo-fascists quite soon.

Also the extreme disconnect from reality that so many over here show is very worrying. This is many ppl that I know, and whom everybody knows, all over the country, people who cannot be reasoned with and who will not put down their phones and shut the damn TV off.
Fixing climate change is simply not going to happen in a world where so many people are so disconnected from even basic reality.

Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
The Jan 6th commission has also confirmed that it will be making criminal referrals to the DoJ.
Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
Yeah, but they also said they didn't know what the charges would be, or who would get them. They've basically gone "We think someone did something.", which I'm pretty sure everyone knew already.
Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
That could be them being careful about not making a prosecution look politically motivated. It won't help much of course.
Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
Interested to see how differently this goes in the courts than with the whole Jan 6th debacle.

Strangely this news is not on the NOS front page (dutch news), so I checked out the Hamburger Abendblatt and the NDR. Naturally it's far more interesting, with far more information in German. Seems to have been quite a conspiracy they had going on there....

Step 1. 50 sad tw.ts storm the German Parliament
Step 2. *A miracle happens*
Step 3. The US, UK, France and Russia agree to reinstate the Third Reich.
I think Step 2 needs a bit more work.
And here's me thinking Brexit was the nadir of deluded far-right thinking ...

Re: US 2021 Capitol insurrection
I can't imagine they had a prayer of actually taking over the government. They might have killed a few people and gotten a few nutjobs in a lather who might have gone out to practice a bit of violence. They also would have gotten the complete and total ire of the majority of the country. But I can't imagine them actually taking control of any part of the government. But the difference is that the real ring leaders are all heading to court and I suspect they will lose. Very unlike the mess in the U.S. Of course, it's all quite different..I know. The U.S. had a traitor in charge when january 6th happened, but the biggest difference will be how many of the leaders actually get more than a slap on the hand or just a stern glance.
