Meanwhile, Barnier's elf-in-chief is warning that those checks on animals moving across the Irish sea are a legal obligation, while our PM is assuring the DUP that they won't happen.

And elsewhere in that live blog, it seems the point of a US trade deal is to have somewhere to send all those cars. Except that it appears we have to roll over for the US tech giants' tax avoidance plans, or there will be tariffs on them.

Bill got royal assent now, and it's law. Doesn't change anything, I know, but it's still sh.t.

IIRC, this also means crashing out at the end of 2020 is also the default in law. Says here it has a clause:

...prohibiting any UK Minister from agreeing to an extension of the transition or implementation period in the Joint Committee (new clause 33)

Nope, because Parliament could change the law again.

I think it's about the executive being bound, rather than parliament, and repealing it it makes it a bigger deal through being a bigger climb down, and thus increases the risk of the crashout.

Yeah, it's all those bits that return out to be faaaaar more complicated than you realise and have all sorts of knock-on effects. That and the fact that Boris's "easy" NI solution will hang around like nuclear waste.

The picture in my mind's eye is of Alexander sitting on a tree branch, busily applying a saw to the portion between him and the trunk, with him saying: "I'm making tree-mendous progress!".

But talk of all these difficulties is 'obviously' a remainer defeatist plot.

I feel sorry for all the people whose lives will be made more difficult by Brexit. They have not been served well by the media or parliament and the powerful. I just hope that when they get angry, their ire will be directed at the correct targets.
