Since that's what's in the bathroom cabinet, you might even be tempted to try it. Yes, it turns out it does work, but you might make a mental note that next time you'll just pour petrol over the whole area and set yourself on fire, just to see if it hurts any less.

Shpalman is right. Capsaicin is lipophillic (dissolves in fats, oil, etc, rather than polar solvents like water). Milk works, but only really the full-fat milk. Dipping the tips of your fingers in a small bowl of olive oil seems to work for me, although it may be that it worked one time and all the other times have been unnecessary!
