I'm pretty hopeful at least one person at this press conference is infectious.

They've been shaking hands, all touching the podium in the same places, all touching their faces.

If one of them dies, a million lives could be saved.

Ha! Pence twice dodged shaking Trump's hand.

In his head he's hearing those happy words: Ladies and gentlemen, the 46th President of the United States.

The Australian home affairs minister, Peter Dutton, did his best to share with Bill Barr and Ivanka Trump last week.

There could be some interesting shenanigans if Barr isn't on deck constantly to put out spot fires for Trump...

I think you're being quite pessimistic here.

It could be several million.

Thought I'd put this here...

Trump yesterday: I'm fine, no worries, no need to get tested.

Trump today: yeah, I've been tested

Are we still testing for the virus in the bloodstream, or do we now have the ability to do antibody tests? If detecting the virus itself, I understand that there is a finite window where there is enough virus in the blood to detect. Before that there is a period from initial infection (some of that time a patient might be themselves infectious), and also after the virus has been fought off. Therefore all a virus test will say is that the person does or doesn't have measurable virus now, not definitively that they are, are not, or have been infected or infectious. If we can do antibody tests we can further narrow that down by telling if they have been infected previously.

Further blood virus tests might be required for a definitive answer.

The current tests are for the virus' RNA (from throat swabs I think, not blood), but antibody tests are in development. These will be very useful for identifying who has developed immunity, especially if we're not going to bother testing the mild cases, as we'll want to get the immune population back outdoors as soon as possible and doing economically active things. They'll also be valuable for providing services and social contact for the elderly and vulnerable.

Antibody tests are (apparently*) available now [1][2], but what we don't know if how good or long lasting the IgG immunity is. There have been reports of re-infection, so having IgG antibodies might not confer sufficient immunity to make you safe to work with vulnerable people who have never been infected. There's a lot we don't know yet.

*My spidey sense tingles on the second link. The first link looks more like a legitimate company, but it seems odd that a small, company in Belfast is offering antibody testing. There's a story here somewhere, which has a high probability of me having been taken in.

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/07/poli ... index.html
A member of the US Navy who serves as one of President Donald Trump's personal valets has tested positive for coronavirus, CNN learned Thursday, raising concerns about the President's possible exposure to the virus.

The valets are members of an elite military unit dedicated to the White House and often work very close to the President and first family. Trump was upset when he was informed Wednesday that the valet had tested positive, a source told CNN, and the President was subsequently tested again by the White House physician.

In a statement, the White House confirmed CNN's reporting that one of the President's staffers had tested positive.

... the White House has not enforced strict social distancing guidelines for staffers and few people inside the building wear masks during the day, including valets.

Not sure I’ve ever - as an adult at least - actively wanted someone to die. I can’t deny the feeling of hope I had when I heard a valet of his has it though.
