Getting Brexit done

Nice to see some concessions on fishing though, that’ll get things moving a bit (for our next concession)

Re: Getting Brexit done
That'll be one of those international treaty things won't it? The sort of thing Britain has a centuries-old reputation for abiding by, where we pool a bit of sovereignty for the greater good.
It is just as well that all down those centuries some here today, gone tomorrow twatbadger never spaffed that reputation up the wall for the sake of a couple of headlines for a few days as I imagine that would make getting those sorts of international agreements in future a lot trickier in the future.

Re: Getting Brexit done
If you want a real laugh about the impending court case, go and have a look at the comments on the BBC news article. Hilarious. Slightly convoluted, certainly misguided but hilarious.

Re: Getting Brexit done
The recent cavalcade of shite completely undermines Tim Davie's whinges that BBC comedy is “unfairly biased against the Tories, Donald Trump and Brexit".
I mean lets put aside for one moment the major point that "the Tories, Donald Trump and Brexit" ARE the establishment and should therefore always be the key focus of any satirists ire regardless of which side is in power, just as Blair and Blair's policies were always the focus when he was in power. A state broadcaster producing pro-establishment "satire" isn't satire it's propaganda.
Putting that to one side, Davie's whines fail under their own terms. When faced with the prospects of a Kent border, health ministers who don't know their own pandemic guidelines and whatever Trump grotesquery is dominating the current news cycle, how can any comedian be expected to somehow make Remainers, Starmer and Biden the punchline?
Talk about elephant in the room, it is the equivalent of watching the classic Blue Peter clip of Lulu the Elephant crapping on the studio floor, standing on Noakes foot and dragging Purves across the floor and deciding the hot-take was "Gee, isn't air-line food horrible!".
Weird times.

The problem is that there are difficult and complex decisions to be made involving tradeoffs with winners and a lot of losers. In order to make progress Johnson needs to take charge, get involved in the details and start making political decisions. However, Boris doesn't do details. So the clock is running out.

Re: Getting Brexit done
The thing which is so disgraceful about the Remoaner's Project Fear is that they still refuse to accept that their overblown claims about things like food safety and animal welfare were completely unfounded with the Government solemnly pinky-promising that they definitely aren't going to trash them the second they are out of the EU. It is almost as if Remoaners think Johnson is the sort of lying sh.t-stain who would no more worry about lying to the public as as he would cheat on his wife.
In unrelated news, Government refuse to enshrine food safety and animal welfare standards in law, also blocks move to monitor fishing vessels.

It’s 24 June, 2025, and Britain is marking its annual Independence Day celebration. As the fireworks stream through the summer sky, still not quite dark, we wonder why it took us so long to leave. The years that followed the 2016 referendum didn’t just reinvigorate our economy, our democracy and our liberty. They improved relations with our neighbours.
and even better:The last thing most EU leaders wanted, once the shock had worn off, was a protracted argument with the United Kingdom which, on the day it left, became their single biggest market. Terms were agreed easily enough. Britain withdrew from the EU’s political structures and institutions, but kept its tariff-free arrangements in place. The rights of EU nationals living in the UK were confirmed, and various reciprocal deals on healthcare and the like remained. For the sake of administrative convenience, Brexit took effect formally on 1 July 2019, to coincide with the mandates of a new European Parliament and Commission.
The United Kingdom now leads a 22-state bloc that forms a free trade area with the EU, but remains outside its political structures. For their part, the EU 24 have continued to push ahead with economic, military and political amalgamation. They now have a common police force and army, a pan-European income tax and a harmonised system of social security. These developments have prompted referendums in three other EU states on whether to copy Britain.
Have you considered stupidity as an explanation

Re: Getting Brexit done
Ha typical Remoaner revisionism.
Where we are today is exactly what Leave promised and every single Leave voter WITHOUT EXCEPTION knew that this was what they were voting for and would gladly vote the same way again to the point where it would be undemocratic and insulting to even double check.
You are also missing the bigger geo-political prize.
On the 1st January 2021 we will have finally unchained ourselves from the rotting political corpse that is European Social Democracy and will be free to handcuff ourselves irrevocably to Donald Trump's political fortunes and the shining future that presumably opens up for us in terms of stable democratic governance, sage diplomatic statesmanship, fair and sensible international trade deals, reliable military partnership and long-term electoral success that I imagine he's renowned for.
What could possibly go wrong?

Re: Getting Brexit done
Do you think Leave voters have noticed yet that the Brexit that was supposedly “done” in January is still somehow going on 9 months later despite a ruling party purged of Remoaners and with a stonking majority?Woodchopper wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 11:32 amYe, so much for the oven ready deal and getting Brexit done. Do you think that the deafening cognitive dissonance there may give them a moment’s pause for thought?

This is a good time to find which of your German car industry friends are useful and loving and will show up any second now to save us.

I’ve been moving my pension and savings out of UK assets over the last while because I figured this would happen. Finished doing that last week, phew.
Re: Getting Brexit done
Ruddy Johnny Foreigner’s fault, and the traitorous Remoaners for stealing all the cake and feeding it to those illegal refugees instead. British pluck will see us through, I didn’t die in two World War Cups to give into the EUSSR!Little waster wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 11:37 amDo you think Leave voters have noticed yet that the Brexit that was supposedly “done” in January is still somehow going on 9 months later despite a ruling party purged of Remoaners and with a stonking majority?Woodchopper wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 11:32 amYe, so much for the oven ready deal and getting Brexit done. I noted elsewhere they had omitted to do so, but it'll be any day now.

Re: Getting Brexit done
Are we talking about Johnson's latest bit of bluster? https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-54566897
Doesn't sound that different from the many other times he's said similar things, and the EU side haven't confirmed it's game over.
Could well just be more aggressive bullshitting, at least for now.

Re: Getting Brexit done
He’s basically demanding the EU look at loads of things they’ve already said they’re prepared to look at. Bluster. We’ll get a sort of micro deal.

Re: Getting Brexit done
I disagree. Firstly, there's two to four weeks left to negotiate an extremely complex agreement. If that was going to happen there needed to be a political breakthrough this week which provided a framework for the diplomats to hammer out the remaining detail over the next few weeks. Apparently they've already told Barnier not to bother turning up for the next round of talks next week. The clock is running out as you read this.Bird on a Fire wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 12:57 pmAre we talking about Johnson's latest bit of bluster? https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-54566897

Secondly, by stating that there must be a "fundamental change in approach" from the EU Johnson has deliberately forced himself and the EU into different corners. If there is to be a deal then either the EU or UK will be seen to capitulate if either the EU makes that fundamental change or the UK goes along with what has always been on offer. Johnson's language isn't that of someone who wants a deal. That might not have mattered in June, but today we're almost out of time.
Overall, a deal might still be possible if both the UK government and EU focus upon that and nothing else for the next month. But that focus isn't there.
Re: Getting Brexit done
There's the possibility that he's doing what he did a year ago: bullshitting that he's negotiating exactly what he wants, caving in to the EU's demands at the last moment, and then lying that it was the EU that blinked. But there really doesn't seem to be time for that now.
