Sci-hub
Seems to be a lot more blocking by ISPs going on.

What about the Telegram bot?
having that swing is a necessary but not sufficient condition for it meaning a thing

Re: Sci-hub
You can access it reliably through a Russian VPN.
I have the Hola browser extension which provides one for free, and once you've set it up once it automatically applies the settings you've chosen.

Re: Sci-hub
VPNs are good for that sort of thing, but you shouldn't use hola, you don't know what your computer might end up doing - clicky

Re: Sci-hub
Thanks for the heads up - I had no idea Hola was a peer-to-peer service, and I'm sure I've read their FAQ at some point which does suggest they've been less than forthcoming about that.
Unfortunately I don't have any money to pay for another VPN, and I need Sci-Hub to access journals to do my PhD. So if my IP does end up being used for something nefarious I'll just have to hope I can demonstrate it wasn't me.

Re: Sci-hub
That's the trouble. It seems that the only ones you can trust are some of the ones you have to pay for. (I stopped using them all when the BBC got better at detecting them)

I've got a friend who says they've had no problems getting to it through Google, via BT internet.

Re: Sci-hub
Just seen this. For watching BBC, ITV, C4 outside the UK I use SmartDNSProxy, which is lighter (no software to install; only the request for the programme is redirected, not the content; and cheaper than any of the non-free VPNs), and seems never to get blocked, perhaps because it's less well-known.
I still pay for a VPN because it's useful for other stuff (unblocking US newspapers, Sci-Hub when I'm in France, watching BBC outside my home WiFi, and one time visiting the web site of a bad scientist who I didn't want tracking me), but SmartDNSProxy.com really is the way to go for reliable and cheap UK TV watching.

Re: Sci-hub
I think I remember reading that TOR is poor for streaming services as the signal gets bounced around so much.
My avatar was a scientific result that was later found to be 'mistaken' - I rarely claim to be 100% correct
ETA 5/8/20: I've been advised that the result was correct, it was the initial interpretation that needed to be withdrawn
Meta? I'd say so!

Yes - the friend who told me about the original problem says he is not getting the block page anymore. Was previously getting a ISP block page saying it had been blocked due to a court order.sideshowjim wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 12:17 amI've got a friend who says they've had no problems getting to it through Google, via BT internet.

Thanks. Might give it a go. To be honest though, I haven't missed it that much!sTeamTraen wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 8:09 pmJust seen this. The cool thing is, you get a two-week free trial just for giving them your e-mail address. No need to give them your card details and then try to cancel - it's that rarest of things, a genuine no-strings free trial. I probably ought to get an affiliate link because I recommend them so often. Just occasionally you get a product that does exactly what it says on the tin.monkey wrote: ↑Mon Nov 09, 2020 12:52 amThanks. Might give it a go. I've switched to Google's public DNS, which seems to be stopping my ISP blocking it.

Re: Sci-hub
Today is Sci-Hub anniversary the project is 10 years old!
I'm going to publish 2,337,229 new articles to celebrate the date. They will be available on the website in a few hours (how about the lawsuit in India you may ask: our lawyers say that restriction is expired already)

Nice. Their lack of 2021 papers has really restricted my access to recent research
