Vaccine rollout in Germany

Post by shpalman » Sat Jan 16, 2021 9:29 pm

Authorities in the northern German state of Lower Saxony claim legal hurdles blocked them from accessing official records when trying to send a written invitation for a vaccination appointment to all citizens aged over 80.
The state decided instead to use post office records, which it said met data protection requirements. But since the Deutsche Post database only partially includes dates of birth, officials have used people’s first names to estimate their ages and “increase the chances of reaching the right recipients”, a spokesperson told the newspaper Bild.

“Therefore not all people in Lower Saxony who are older than 80 will receive a letter,” the health ministry of Lower Saxony conceded in a statement on its website.
“We are looking at a very overzealous interpretation of the legal requirements.”

From last week: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/ ... of-support
Politicians in Germany are stepping out in support of the AstraZeneca vaccine as public scepticism around the University of Oxford-developed product threatens to hamper Europe’s Covid-19 immunisation programme.

The vaccine, subject of an acrimonious tug-of-war between its British-Swedish manufacturer and the European commission last month, is being described by German media as a “shelf warmer” as only about 17% of doses delivered to the country have been administered so far.

According to the German disease control agency’s monitoring, 129,021 doses of a delivered 736,800 had been administered by Thursday this week.

The health minister, Jens Spahn, on Friday issued a public display of confidence in the vaccine, describing it as a “privilege” to be offered an injection with the “safe and effective” British jab. The Berlin mayor, Michael Müller, threatened to send people to the back of the queue if they refuse it and ask for alternatives.

“I won’t allow tens of thousands of doses to lie around on our shelves while millions of people across the country are waiting to be immunised,” he told Tagesspiegel newspaper. “Those who don’t want the vaccine have missed their chance.”

Germany is apparently considering the AstraZeneca vaccine for over-65's based on the data from Scotland.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-56227171
On Friday, Thomas Mertens, who heads Germany's vaccine commission, told broadcaster ZDF that the body would "very soon publish a new updated recommendation" on the AstraZeneca vaccine.

He said it was waiting for more details from the authors of the study carried out in Scotland.
I don't know about Germany but I'm looking forward to seeing (and being part of) the reaction in Italy from teachers and university staff on finding out that they aren't the next phase of the rollout after all.

The idea that teachers should be treated as a special case is bonkers. There’s no justification for it whatsoever.

I'm not sure if Germany ever did. I know the UK thought about it and decided not to.

Again there is a problem with messaging that confuses people and adds to vaccine hesitancy.

The trolley problem as usually stated is a terrible thought experiment. But it turns out that in the real world, people really do prefer to kill thousands of people through inaction than to take a tiny chance of killing a few dozen people through action.

The German govt's vaccine experts believe that over the 14 days after inoculation you would statistically expect to see 1 to 1.4 cases of CVST per 1m people. Among AZ vaccine recipients the incidence is about 4 per 1m - IE three or four times the "normal" rate.

Even if that is the case, what’s the risk of covid to the unvaccinated?

Germany seems to be having about 84 cases per week per 100,000 so in two weeks ~1700/1m.

Assuming they're more or less evenly distributed by age, the IFR at age ~45 is 0.1% so ~2 deaths per million in two weeks, although this may be better data more specific to Germany. Using the CFR of ~2% would give me 30-40 deaths per million in two weeks. That's probably about right since Germany seems to be having 2-3 deaths per million per day but I don't know the age breakdown of that (or how their Pfizer rollout to the over-80's is going).

Our local radio presenter pointed out that the clot risk from the pill was about 1000 greater than from the vaccine. He also wondered whether people being locked down and less active would lead to a higher risk

Merkel advocated for a 5-day lockdown of churches and shops over Easter, but has reversed her position on that. Is Germany about to have its biggest peak - similar to the catastrophic decision to allow mixing over Christmas in the UK?

Vaccine skepticism and anti-mask/lockdown folk are becoming quite influential there, particularly in the former East where the far right parties have gained in popularity in the last 10 years. (Do you see a pattern here?)

The numbers there might make for depressing reading over the next month or so: "the president of the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases has warned that there could be as many as 100,000 new coronavirus infections a day in Germany if the spread of the coronavirus is not curbed"

I'm puzzled why Germany is not going to lockdown. In the absence of a huge increase in vaccination, which I can't see how they could achieve, it seems inevitable that there will be a big surge in cases.

Worst of all, the immunisation hyperdrive remains stuck in first gear: 90 days since the first jab was administered, only 10% of Germany’s population have received their first dose, compared with 42% in the UK and 26% in the US. Even France, once seen as Europe’s vaccine laggard, has given a higher share of its population a first dose than Germany.

Weird how Germany hasn't managed to vaccinate as many people as the Pfizer-importing f.ck-all-exporting UK.

At Our World in Data you'll see that Germany is perfectly in line with the EU average and this comment about France is at best misleading and at worse actually wrong.

Dicking about with the order of priority groups (e.g. because you have supplies of a vaccine which you don't know if it's going to work in older people because the drug company limited its trial to younger healthy people, i.e. exactly the opposite of the people in most need of help from it, so as to get better looking data for "ethical" reasons, until the UK decides to actually do an experiment on its whole population) is something you can, and probably have to, do when supplies of vaccines are so scarce.

Oh sorry my mistake, to make Germany look bad the lazy bullshitting journalist c.nts were cherry picking the share of people who had received a first dose.

"Even France, once seen as Europe’s vaccine laggard, has given a higher share of its population a first dose than Germany."

f.cking morons.

The variations during the past week are probably all down to how different countries' regulators have dealt with the AstraZeneca vaccine killing a small number of middle-aged subjects with anomalous blood clots in the brain.

Also, since the total doses are anyway the same, it's due to different countries having different strategies regarding first and second doses, again thanks to (a) AstraZeneca accidentally messing up their trial so that it worked better and (b) the UK doing an experiment on its population.

(* - The EMA's decision is that the benefits outweigh the risks, not that there's no risk.)

Well...Frau HS’s mum has told her that she’s now able to get an appointment, “but only for the AstraZeneca one, so we’re going to think about it.”

She’s cited “issues with pregnancy” as one of the problems she’s concerned about. She’s 71.

Mademoiselle warumich's mum flat out refused the AZ vaccine. Got pfizered eventually, luckily

Actually had it pointed out to me that while Berlin is pausing for under 60's, "Munich, according to the German newspaper Bild, has also halted the jab for anyone over 60."

Yeah, it's Bild, still a more reliable source of news than the AstraZeneca press office.
