Thanks for posting the thread, nezumi. There's no need to delete it, it's a topic that's perfectly valid for discussion, though obviously care is, as you say, very much required.

What the actual f.ck? What kind of disordered mind would come up with this idea?

Re: That Linehan *censored* again.
Some people may question why Linehan has gone down such a long and dark path of horrific transphobia, bullying, and just generally being a c.nt in the last ten or so years. Essentially, it started when he wrote an episode of the IT crowd which was (in my opinion) a pretty good one in most respects, but it featured an off-colour thread of jokes throughout about someone being trans, and some comedy about how that meant they lived their lives. TBH at the time I didn't think much of it myself (I had the barest awareness of trans rights issues back then), but I see now why the trans community took against it.
Anyway, some criticism came Linehan's way, and it seemed to launch him on this journey of discuntery eventually leading to him being one of the few blue tick people on twitter who've had their account removed. He's said a lot of things which are absolutely horrific, and the obsessively abusive path he's travelled down in the last few years doesn't appear to have done him any good.
People can read about some of the things he's said and done related to transpeople on wikipedia.

Rage away.
I'm just completely befuddled as to how he got to the point where he could consider this as a thing he should do.
Re: That Linehan *censored* again.
Having read the article, that seems like a considered and calm response

Re: That Linehan *censored* again.
I used to genuinely like him. He came across very well when I heard him on panel shows.
Then he seemed to go f.cking insane with this trans gender hate stuff.
History will not look well on his like, and others in a similar boat.

I've just been rereading a book about the Crusades. People do all sorts of terrible things when they think they're justified and see themselves as heroes fighting for a good cause, even without religion. Vileness becomes normal, especially when there are rewards - either booty or fame or applause. Dissenting voices are easy to ignore.
Re: That Linehan *censored* again.
Not that this should matter, but I wonder what he's *actually* trying to express here? It's all a bit Freudian.
I can be a little insensitive to where the line is with this stuff, apols if this crosses it for anyone.

He had a reputation for being pretty grumpy on Twitter before he got into the anti trans stuff. It was a slow burn.

Agreed.

I do not twit. From what I heard of him he seemed to be a bit irascible but not a dick. He has definitely gone full dickwad here.discovolante wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 10:00 amHe had a reputation for being pretty grumpy on Twitter before he got into the anti trans stuff. It was a slow burn.

I think thin skinned might be a better way to describe him. My reference point as to whether he was just a bit of a grump or something worse than that is that I'm pretty sure I saw him getting off a tube carriage I was getting on some time ago, and I consciously decided to give him a wide berth (not that I have a habit of hassling celebs who are going about their business anyway but still, it's more about the instinctive reaction I had I suppose).cvb wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 11:21 amI do not twit. I thought he seemed reasonable ... but then as you said.
Yes, there is a definite subset who seem to think that transgender people are "just pretending" and that to defend women they have to suppress transgender rights. JK Rowling being another obvious one who also has a huge blindspot.Tessa K wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 9:36 amI've just been rereading a book about the Crusades. And as you say, feeling that one is on the side of the angels often makes one prone to such behaviour. See also many of the conspiracy theory trolls, being absolutely vile because they think that, say Covid is a scamdemic to enable mind-control or something.

There are only two genders. Male and female. That’s it. If you have an issue with that, just crack open a Bible. It’s right there in black and white. #MrPotatoHead

Apparently he's been to a HoL committee today "to talk about how he got so mad that people on twitter didn’t like a joke from his TV show that he destroyed his career and his marriage".El Pollo Diablo wrote: ↑Mon Feb 22, 2021 4:47 pmSome people may question why Linehan has gone down such a long and dark path of horrific transphobia, bullying, and just generally being a c.nt in the last ten or so years. Last time I checked on All4 The IT Crowd was still there, next to Father Ted. What does he mean it’s been taken off Channel 4?

I've investigated this and s3e4 is missing, which is the one where "Douglas finds the love of his life in a journalist named April, but mishears that she used to be a man, thinking she said that she is from Iran."

It's really um, fascinating, watching so many people go publicly off the rails, in various ways.

I'd probably not pick precisely those words myself. My version would involve swearing, a car chase, and the destruction of no less than three independent businesses.discovolante wrote: ↑Tue Mar 09, 2021 8:39 pmIt's really um, fascinating, watching so many people go publicly off the rails, in various ways.
I can't shake the feeling that the era we're experiencing is the collapse of civilisation. I know that's both irrational and over the top but well... public "going off the rails" is basically the same as the arse end of the Roman Empire.*
I wish Linehan would just go away and be quietly bigoted ALL ON HIS OWN.
