agarrrrrrr (jelly for pirates!)

Post by Ladysavage » Fri May 14, 2021 7:17 am

One of our timewasters working from home tasks is to find a new supplier for pre-made agar. Google is not my friend so am doing this via the nerd network. Can anyone advise me?
  • Making it in house isn't an option
  • we need approx 1L in 20ml portions
  • need it delivered to east Fife
  • sadly we can't pay you in whisky
you can message me privately rather than replying if you like!

Have you tried wine making suppliers? I'm sure that is, along with isinglass, what m'dad used to use to take the cloudiness out of his home made wine.
The name sticks cos of its being an old name for hawthorne.

Damn right. If you find one let me know; I've looked but can't find an internet reference to it at all; nor can I remember where it was that I first read it in.
Hey ho.
Just have to make do without.

Not helpful, but this reminded me of a job I worked where a very bright PhD student poured a significant quantity of waste agarose solution down the sink in the lab. We got to the point of seeking quotes to get replacement pipework before we managed to shift the damn stuff!

PhD students are very bright, by definition almost, but they’re still kids pretty much. They’re definitely a step up from undergrads, but I still like to keep a close eye on what they’re doing.

I'm at the point where I have to do that for both post-docs and my bosses and senior colleagues.

We had a PhD student at our uni who's tale of woe was used in our undergraduate safety talk. He'd weighed out his sodium very carefully under oil, followed all safety precautions then promptly chucked the excess sodium into the nearest Belfast sink and turned on the tap. The flames licked the ceiling apparently

Thanks for all the suggestions I shall hunt them out next week!
