Halifax Hum

Post by JQH » Wed Oct 13, 2021 8:10 pm

A mysterious humming is plaguing a West Yorkshire village.

Is it:

a) The Russians?
b) the MoD?
c) an industrial process?
d) Lankies softening the area up prior to invasion?
e) summat else?
And remember that if you botch the exit, the carnival of reaction may be coming to a town near you.

It'll be a class of schoolkids.

We used to do it to wind up teachers.

It'll be the sound of a generator powering the lights at a cannabis farm.

There's a few cases like this around the world where people in a particular town all report odd humming noises. I don't think many have been conclusively solved. One if the more interesting suggestions is infrasound, but you wonder why it would seemingly have started recently. If it were an industrial process I'd expect it to be relatively straightforward to link the beginning of reports to whenever the process in question started, but I suppose that applies to anything.

If anyone else remembers watching That's Life in the 1970s, one of their things was this widespread hum that lots of people could hear but no-one could identify. The most popular theory was something to do with gas pipelines, as I recall; possibly this was about the time of the change from town gas to natural gas. Then after a while everyone forgot about it.

An ear infection has left them all with chronic tinnitus.

Or it's down to that giant beehive in Robert Meggs' loft.
