I like the fact that you’re posting about this on one of the smallest corners of the internet
Why?

I have come across Tony Yates before but don’t currently follow him, so I hadn’t seen that post (which has had all of 40 reposts I think, so neither have many other people), so no, it probably isn’t that.

The size of the platform is not related to its quality. I left Twitter because it’s owned by a fascist and overrun with fascists. I can easily mute the fuckwits on Bluesky and have a nice time there. I don’t go there to debate, I go to learn about clean energy and stuff.

He’s hardly the only one. It’s rife with it.
Stolen/borrowed from somewhere else:
“Hi, welcome to Bluesky! Is this your first day here? Sure, let me show you around. You’re going to love it, we’re so much better than that other place. This? Oh this is a special badge to prove that I was here before you. Before most people in fact. Why is it there? Because how else are you supposed to know that I’m better than you, silly! Anyway, over here we have LISTS. Lists are great, they really make us different to The Site That Shall Not Be Named. This one, for example, tells you what kind of school someone’s parents sent them to when they were little. Why? You’re asking WHY? Why would you NOT want to know? How else are you supposed to decide whether someone’s views are worth listening to? Anyway, moving on, this list here tells you whether people are still using the The Site That Shall Not Be Named. Because you deserve to know if they’re morally pure, right? I mean how else are we going to keep this community healthy and diverse if we don’t name and shame everyone who… Wait! Where are you going?”

There's only one way to get to the bottom of this: a YouGov poll.

Errr...I don't think Tristan meant it was down to Yates specifically. Rather the fact that Bluesky is infested with people like this - posting stuff like this - and also a load of self-regarding tosh - leading the platform to disappear up it's own a*rse faster than you can say "Wow ... just wow!"
I don't think I'd read books if every other book was about why people aren't reading more books, which books I should read (starter-packs), which books I shouldn't read, why books are so much better than scrolls, and if every book blurb said "Wow...just wow!"

Yeah I’d have thought that much was obvious.

It might be infested, but I wouldn’t know because I can’t be arsed reading that stuff and it doesn’t really impinge on what I do read.

Bluesky isn't growing because it's the downslope of a massive signup surge from when Twitter was banned and Musk was in everyone's face. Meanwhile, Twitter is shrinking faster, without a massive signup wave first.

The world must be very confusing for you when you believe a load of old tosh from propagandists.

someone made a labeller for prominent accounts (predominantly in the media) to say if they went to private school, the point of which was to demonstrate how the media is dominated by private school attendees. the label is only visible if you subscribe to the labeller, which approximately 500 or so users like. apparently this was a very mean thing to do.

Haha oh god. I suppose there's an argument to be made that some people might receive abuse from people who don't understand that you can't decide where your parents send you to school, but it's not as if journalism as a profession is a paragon of discretion and sensitivity, or the prejudices of journalists are irrelevant to their reporting...
I would really like to see what happened if there was more openness in society about financial circumstances and social backgrounds. To be honest probably not much now it before we entered the post-truth era...
