A New York judge has threatened Donald Trump with jail for a "blatant violation" of a gag order in his civil fraud trial.

Judge Arthur Engoron said in court that the former president had failed to remove a social media post mocking a clerk at the court.

Judge Engoron demanded Mr Trump take down the "untrue and disparaging" post about the clerk earlier this month

It really will be impressive if Trump manages to get jailed in a civil case, as is threatened for further violations of that gag order.

WaPo says:
Rumors had swirled for weeks that Ellis might be among those seeking a plea deal — in part because of her public complaints that Trump was unwilling to pay her mounting legal bills.
Let's see, what other lawyers has he not paid?

Giuliani has been struggling to pay legal bills, I think?

But on the other hand, Rudy is in too deep to get a nice plea deal, and too unreliable to turn witness for the prosecution.

Remember that Cohen was a key fixer who knew lots of Trump's secrets and said he'd take a bullet for Trump.

Trump repaid this by humiliating him at his son's Bar mitzvah

It was assumed by many, but not known.

Which shuts down first? The Republican party or the government?

So we've got a house GOP that's proving itself incapable of governing in order to win the support of someone that's had four co-conspirators turn on them in a week, and today was facing testimony in court from another co-conspirator that turned on them some time ago.

Indecision undecided!

It's Mike Johnson. I have no idea who he is either. He's a Trump fan, was on his legal team for impeachment 1. Wears glasses.

And Trump was called to the stand just now, got told he was incredible, sorry, not credible and fined another $10k.

Johnson was also behind some of the more bizarre election cases that Trump's team brought, and lost on. He has said that there should be a national ban on abortion so that women produce more babies to fund social security. He has called for a ban on same sex marriage. He opposes sending funding to Ukraine.

Is this the one that he was warned with jail time for beforehand?

Because $10k is pretty minimal to someone who either owns or owes hundreds of millions.

This particular violation of the gag order seems to have been at least vaguely debatable, so doubling the previous fine is a safe, hard-to-appeal sanction, and lays the groundwork for going to a non-fine penalty next time.

My thought is it's a nice ratcheting mechanism that avoids going hard straight off and allowing him to play the martyr (having already invoked Nelson Mandela). Just keep upping it each time, it's not like he has the capability to stop himself. Eventually he'll either get the message, be gagged by his own lawyers or go absolutely ballistic and really drop himself in it.

I like the comments that the Trumps were attempting, and failed, to do a Legally Blonde moment, which precipitated his storming out.

Oh dear. Documents just shown in court showing Trump was restored as a trustee of the Trump Revocable Turst on 15 th January 2021 which basically means he knew he had lost and was leaving office.
